I coded Commodore 64 games in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2020s. And plenty of other stuff in between.

One of my favourites. Worth it for the Coat Hanger joke.

They definitely missed an opportunity. I remember the form factor being pretty good.

Yeah, that doesn’t look totally official! This was to be a proper licenced version. I even made a new version for a fancy Pocket PC with ATI graphics acceleration and a two player Bluetooth mode.

In 2002/3, while at Zed Two, I coded two complete Pocket PC games that were never released. One of these was and official conversion of Tetris. Here's @stepickford.bsky.social's hand-drawn design for the layout and how it looked in the game.

Not heard of Andy, I know John but I don’t think it was him. Perhaps it was just a company thing.

I would have sworn it was you. I'd lay money on us taking an external producer, and we didn't have many. Certainly early 1990, Skull & Crossbones time. Perhaps it was your predecessor, but if so their name is lost to me. Paul Holmes was with us for Spitting Image but I thought you replaced him.

Ha! It was a good small studio. Far from the best but we got stuff done. And we got to see Prisoner Cell Block H the stage play (I’m sure you came). What’s not to like?

The desk Richard is looking at in the second picture was mine, you can see the back of my 1541 disk drive. The other guy in the pics is David Fish, Walking Circles’ excellent artist. Adrian Page’s back is shown, he tended to do the gfx for my #C64 games. The whole office was really a storage unit.

Very sad to hear of the passing of my friend @bone6502.bsky.social. He was in QA when I first met him at Creations, and by the time we were at Zed Two, he was one of the finest coders I'd worked with. I know we're all getting older, but we're losing too many of the old UK games crowd far too soon.

In my first job in a dev studio we used in house tools for 8-bit. Moved to Degas Elite as 16-bit became a thing, and eventually DPaint Anim.

Action Biker on the C64. Never did understand how the isometric masking worked.

If I could turn bosses off in games I would. So much development goes in to them that it’s never going to happen.

Yeah, I turned all the levels down to their easiest setting. Made it a much better game for me, but I still got stuck. The old school manual aesthetic with handwritten notes is a lovely touch.

Nice. I’m ashamed to say I didn’t know this exhibition was a thing.

It is, thanks for posting it. I'm not so sure I've seen anything like that before. It also goes to show how complex something that looks so simple is.

Moby Games has a few errors and omissions in my profile, so I'm claiming it. To do so, I have to post the following message here. I'm claiming my @mobygames.com profile: www.mobygames.com/person/11734...

What a wonderful video. I did a tiny bit of #C64 demo coding back in the 80s but preferred to make games. Mainly because it's easier than some of the trickery described here!

Today I learnt that my #C64 game APB appeared on not one, but two compilations in the 90s. I was aware of the TNT bundle, but there was also something named Winning Team. I don't have either in my personal collection, so I may try to pick them up someday. www.bigboxcollection.com/WinningTeam....

This is such a great site. Not sure physical is the answer in the digital age but it definitely was when I was growing up in the 80s. Sitting on the bus home reading the manual to a game I’d spent weeks saving up was a great time.

Lovely. Anyways thought the first boxer was promoting a rival: “Gabby Jay. E.A”

I really liked Matt Furniss’ tunes and nobody could accuse it of being a brown game. Had all the levels. I think the gameplay can fairly be described as moribund though.

Wasn’t expecting to get a burn off @retrogamermag.bsky.social on my Sunday morning read! 😉 I thought our home conversions of a mediocre arcade game were OK.

I closed my Facebook account around 2 years ago. Felt like a big deal at the time. Turns out it was nothing of the sort. I did download my history for photos etc. but not sure I’ve even looked at those.

Well this is a forgotten memory. Was it used on Spy Hunter or Raid Over Moscow? I got both free for subscribing to Zzap.

I used to play this loads. I think the limited dictionary makes it a more realistic opponent for a fool like me.

At the #britfest in Altrincham. Came mainly for Sleeper who didn’t disappoint. May as well continue drinking in the sun and watch the Happy Mondays later.

I’ve played many video games. Hardly any have made me cry laughing, but this did back in the day. Brilliant fun.

Rad Racer, I worked on a (Real?) Ghostbusters prototype. Cant remember others but I was only there 2 years.

I had plenty of games cancelled during development. It was even worse when something was complete and still didn’t get published. Chun’s memories here are all too familiar.

Yeah, we called them sheets. “I’m stuck on the fourth sheet of Chiller.” Think it went out of fashion with single screen games.

I've been revisiting the #C64 source code for Millie & Molly for reasons. In there I found some old prototype screens from when I was using Rainbow Island sprites and Rick Dangerous backgrounds. And the even older 8x8 char version with my very own programmer art.

There was a surfeit of brilliant #C64 conversions around this time, before arcade machines got more powerful. Mr Do, Up ‘n’ Down, Spy Hunter and this all jump to mind.

I’ve been reading @jazrignall.bsky.social’s excellent book Games of a Lifetime. The early chapters are evocative of the OG arcade years. I’m now in Aberystwyth where most of Julian’s memories are from. I’m hoping some kind of portal to the past opens so I can see Asteroids arrive for the first time.
