it is the turning away
from icebox cakes
lemon and light, yellow
and white, barely frosted-
drizzles of cool
sticky syrup
crumbs brushed crumbs
swept to birds and sand

to the dense dark cakes
the apple and the pumpkin
rich cinnamon and weighty
butter creams thick like socks
slicing in at firesides with hot drinks, palates hungry all season
crumbs gathered against the wet of a sponge.
