Why are disasters so political and how can a researcher navigate the false binary of objectivity and reflexivity? It was a wonderful discussion with Prof. Ksenia Chmutina and Prof. Jason Von Meding. If you want to watch the conversation, you can access it in youtube: www.youtube.com/live/an-BhZA...

Heartbreaking to see an empty chair during a final exam. My student has been struggling with mental health. She really tried to make it work this semester. We’ve been conversing about this and she’s been receiving professional help.

Our students can enroll in Undergraduate Research Opportunities where they work with their professors on active research projects. These ladies are keen on getting trained to do fieldwork and coding for disaster research. Today, I am training them to use @maxqda @ubdbuzz.bsky.social

The community we engaged with in the Philippines is experiencing flooding again. My parents also reported that our house has been affected. Flooding in Palawan has become a constant occurrence, which is in stark contrast to my childhood when I had zero experience of flooding.

Received the beautiful news that the chapter we proposed tentatively titled Human Security and the Ethics of Care in Researching Place and Identity was accepted for a collection. This is one of those papers that I will truly enjoy writing. 💜

My Linkedin is full of “open to work” notices from furloughed humanitarian and development workers both from the US and back home in the Philippines. What a set back for humanity!

I'm not teaching my grad course 'Civil Resistance: How It Works' this semester. But here is an abridged version of the course schedule, readings, and films I used the last time I taught it (in 2022). Just in case it's useful. drive.google.com/file/d/14RRJ...

Objects have lives. They carry stories—of survival, loss, & hope. Anthropologist Arjun Appadurai teaches us that they are more than things; they are fragments of who we are & what we endure. Over the past year, I collected stories of flood vulnerabilities & resilience in the BIMP
