I had exactly one college classmate who was a militant that I know of. He was an environmentalist, and, while I liked and admired him, I couldn’t imagine being him. I can’t change the past, but I’m single parenting a 6th grader, watching him become justifiably outraged, and I won’t stand in his way.

I left my hometown 40 years ago & though I’m happy with who I am & wouldn’t be this way but for leaving, I knew at the time leaving was a mistake, and, if I’m honest, I still do. Had I stayed, I would have been objectively worse but unable to know that. I need therapy for thinking I should be worse.

I thought Brooks was closer to Kristol’s age than mine & that accounted for his being a conservative. I just learned I’m a tad older than Brooks. Now I see him like the few college classmates of mine who mimed conservatism. At the time I saw contrarianism. I see Brooks as a hyper-platformed sellout.

It’s my understanding, too, that Reagan did that, the same way Nixon covertly disrupted the Vietnam peace talks. Reagan also famously defended Nixon post-Watergate & I’ve recently read about Republicans’ claiming Nixon himself was dirty-tricked out of office by Democrats & the so-called Deep State.

My dream: The GOP is resigned to letting Trump drag them down to minority status in Congress & once it’s clear Trump won’t be ousted before 1/20/27, Vance will know he could serve two full terms & he & enough GOP Senators to actually oust Trump will let it leak they’re trying to find a way to do it.

Bush Sr could’ve been Ike-like relegating the Joe McCarthy-like Gingrich but the GOP put winning above principle

In 1994, I blamed Clinton for claiming the bond market made him break his promise of a middle class tax cut & blamed the GOP for claiming Gingrich was intelligent. 2024 broke me. It’s sad and frightening that he may be incapable of being honest with himself. Beyond his unreliable vote for the next two years, even if Dems win a majority in the Senate, and even if they abolish the filibuster on most bills, they won’t be able to override Trump’s vetoes. Come 2029, however,… :)

I’ve been worried about excessive intra-Dem conflict, but, when I see pols like Nixon in action, especially with Trump’s cratering approval numbers & the apparent absence of any even halfway decent Republicans, I can cope better with my stress over the imminent midterms, believing in a bright future

Maybe Newsom’s positioning himself as the plausible nominee who’s the last one standing like Humphrey after LBJ declined to run, RFK was assassinated & McCarthy couldn’t pull it together. If Dems want to retain the votes of the unhappy voters they’re likely to get this year & will need in 2028 to get a trifecta in 2029, they must convince the 50% in between the top 10% & the bottom 40% they’ll never join the former, but, if they ally with the latter, sustainable progress can be made.
