The [negative] self talk is now part of the pattern. It's a protective layer on top of the pattern to make exploration harder. The pattern is one you've learnt or been taught in order to keep you safe and happy in life.
It's building up a wall between
you (and others) and whatever
your core belief is that is
upholding the pattern.

This Tuesday’s throwback newsletter is about the power of trusting in yourself: Self sabotage absolutely shows up as me invalidating myself and my feelings, and making me feel small and child-like in situations where I’m anxious.
Everything is a work in progress, but I can trust in how far I’ve come, and take my power from that.

September was pain awareness month. I knew I wanted to talk about this, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to say. As always, I started writing and eventually something fell out, but later than I wanted it to. However, it's always a good time to talk about chronic pain, so here we are.
Living with pain has taught me a lot about sitting with discomfort, and learning when to distract myself and when to look after myself.

I am a planner. I love to make a plan (sometimes that plan even gets executed!) It’s a pattern, one I often use it as a distraction, or a way to avoid sitting with uncomfortable feelings. Read more: buttondown.com/SelfCareBack...
Here’s the thing, you get to move through your life with yourself, and that means through all of it, and all of you. Sitting with yourself and letting yourself feel all of your feelings is part of the journey.

It's been a while since I've thought about self talk as a subject for content. I been thinking recently about how things like 'you can't hate yourself into someone you love' and 'if being harsh on yourself worked it would've worked by now' are great places to start, but where do you go from there?
This is difficult, and the urge to use this practice to be mean to yourself will be present (god, why can't you just be nice to yourself?), but try to avoid that as well.

‘You can’t hate yourself into someone you love’ ‘If being hard on yourself worked it would’ve worked by now’ Both these things are true, and might give you a moment of pause if you’ve not heard them before. Maybe it gives you an insight[..]where do you go after that? buttondown.com/SelfCareBack...
The secret here is: getting to know yourself can be joyful. Spending time with yourself, treating yourself to stillness and gentle kindness can be wondrous.

So much of the work in counselling is about slowing down and holding in places that feel uncomfortable. A new ache after a gym session means moving muscles not normally worked in day to day life. A new ache after counselling means a new exploration, or a holding in a place normally glanced over.
We think of acceptance as synonymous with not changing or staying still. Often moving to acceptance can prompt change.

If, deep down, you do things for other people because this is a role that was thrust upon you as a child, and it’s how you got positive attention (or simply a lack of negative attention), then this becomes a coping mechanism. Read more about accepting nurturing: buttondown.com/SelfCareBack...

Self-awareness is an understanding of your own emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. It allows you to reflect on yourself. Metacognition is an understanding of your own processes and patterns. It's thinking about your own thoughts. Read more: buttondown.com/SelfCareBack...

I once had someone tell me they didn't find person centred counselling useful, because they needed to hear difficult truths and be shown tough love. I've been thinking about this conversation as I move into radical compassion. Read more: buttondown.com/SelfCareBack...

This week's newsletter is introducing: The Nonsense Index. There is nonsense about, are you okay with that? Are you getting enough out of whatever it is to outweigh that nonsense? Read more: buttondown.com/SelfCareBack...
It can even be used as a more general check in on your life. How many nonsense streams are you currently handling? Are you reaching your limit of nonsense?

I'm not knowledgeable about the economy, but I feel that a property investor advertising with a raw teabag is a recession indicator.

What could possibly have happened between 2019 and now that had led to so many more people being unable to work due to ill health? A mystery for the ages

There were 800,000 more people out of work now than in 2019 due to health conditions, costing employers £85bn a year, according to the review by former John Lewis boss Sir Charlie Mayfield.

If you've not seen it before, the Mankoski Pain scale is something I find really useful to conceptualise my pain both to myself and others. I find the normal 1-10, where 10 is the worst pain you can imagine so stressful, and this really helps me think about how my pain is affecting me
0 – Pain free
1 – Very minor annoyance – occasional minor twinges. No medication needed.
2 – Minor annoyance – occasional strong twinges. No medication needed.
3 – Annoying enough to be distracting. Mild painkillers are effective (aspirin, ibuprofen)
4 – Can be ignored if you are really involved in your work, but still distracting. Mild painkillers relieve pain for 3-4 hours.
5 – Can't be ignored for more than 30 minutes. Mild painkillers reduce pain for 3-4 hours.
6 – Can't be ignored for any length of time, but you can still go to work and participate in social activities. Stronger painkillers (codeine, acetaminophen-hydrocodone) reduce pain for 3-4 hours.
7 – Makes it difficult to concentrate, interferes with sleep. You can still function with effort. Stronger painkillers are only partially effective. Strongest painkillers relieve pain (extended-release form of oxycodone, morphine)
8 – Physical activity severely limited. You can read and converse with effort. Nausea and dizziness set in as factors of pain. Strongest painkillers reduce pain for 3-4 hours.
9 – Unable to speak. Crying out or moaning uncontrollably – near delirium. Strongest painkillers are only partially effective.
10 – Unconscious. Pain makes you pass out. Strongest painkillers are only partially effective.

Every couple of months, I remove the paywall from one of my posts. This is one of those posts (you can get weekly writing from me from as little as £5 a month!). This post is all about self-sabotage and assumptions. buttondown.com/SelfCareBackpack/archive/self-sabotage-2336
I’ve made the assumption (from experience) that, for lack of a better phrase, I’m the problem. I’m not cut out for the work of marketing and building an audience, and I essentially have to force myself in the least worst way possible.

I did a vision board/affirmation board last night at my first in person workshop! My 2024 affirmation is consistency. Not in a 'have a strict routine' way, but in a 'not neglecting areas of my life and getting out of my own way' way.
A vision board on my wall. In the middle is the word consistency. There are other words around the outside (sustainable focus, energy, me time, believe in yourself, keep walking, breath). There's a a tea pot, a pile of books, a photo of a jacket potato, and a clapper board to remind me to keep doing things I enjoy. There's a 'Stay Curious' sticker to remind me to do that. There's butterflies and space stickers to remind me of things I enjoy.

Negative self talk, as well as things like feelings of shame, anxiety, depression, work in absolutes and they snowball.

I’ll never be able to do this, I’ll always be like this, it’s all my fault.

The practice of being kind can help reframe our self talk, and that can help us push back against the absolutes and see ourselves clearly. The aspirational ones can be a reminder of how you want to be.

Not as another way to beat yourself up, but as a goal, something to use for reflection.I respond to things in a calm and grounded manner
