Every reputable expert I know considers mRNA vaccine technology to be one of the most revolutionary advances in medicine in our lifetimes. Its inventors won the Nobel Prize in 2023. Shutting it down now is pointless self-harm to humanity.

Cullion [KUL-ee-un] (n.) - A base, despicable, or vile fellow; a rascal. A rude, mean-spirited person. Used in a sentence: “That slubberdegullion is a smelly old cullion, strutting through gilded halls; if you mention the list, he’ll clench up his fist and say that the news is false.”
Grandiloquent Word of the Day logo - Sepia-toned graphic with a baroque Victorian typeface and a pen-and-ink illustration of a corpulent old guy in a top hat, walking with an air of superiority as he knocks upon a door while holding a long list in his hand.

Was honoured to be a keynote at the #ScienceDiplomacySummit at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington earlier this week. We need science diplomacy now more than ever, to promote global cooperation and address shared challenges. 🌍🔬 🔗Read my remarks: science.gc.ca/site/science...

Why it would be utter madness to stop funding mRNA vaccine technology
It's not a just a revolutionary and safe vaccine technology – mRNA could help make the best and most expensive drugs in the world affordable for everyone

Taking this occasion of Sagan’s 90th birthday to reflect on the awesome and somewhat comforting reality that “the earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena.” There’s a lot of stuff out there in the universe… Maybe some of it is intelligent?
A photo of the grave of Carl Sagan, taken by the author many years ago. It depicts a black stone slab flush against the grass that reads “Carl Edward Sagan, November 9, 1934 to December 20, 1996.” Surrounding the gravestone are scores of blue marbles, representing the earth, or “pale blue dot, which were left by people paying their respects over the years. Also in the frame is a copy of Isaac Asimov’s _Foundations Edge_.

It’s nice when your work makes headlines. Well, the good headlines anyway.
Screen capture of a London Free Press article whose headline reads “Canada’s top scientist to Western University graduates: Science can unite us”. The article describes a convocation speech given by Mona Nemer, Canada’s chief science advisor, on how science can be a cornerstone for peace and diplomacy. The address was given on June 12 to the University of Western Ontario Science Faculty graduating class of 2024 and was very well received. A video of the speech can be found on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/event/4271781

Mona Nemer’s remarks begin at about one hour and twenty minutes in to the video.

Interesting set design with raked seating onstage lets the actors sit audience-style and watch *us* while riffing on life imitating art. Line, please!

Pretty good, eh? Well I guess this one’s going to the top of my reading list.
Image of a page from a 1943 international thriller novel, entitled “Coffin For One.” The page includes excerpts of reviews of the book. One review simply says, “Pretty good.” There is no further detail and no compelling description to entice someone to read the book. It is just described as being “pretty good.”

Too bad the word “miasma” carries so much historical baggage… It could be reconstrued as a useful synonym for “bioaerosol”. Plus it has that cool plural inflection that could make for some catchy rhymes in public health messaging. (Piñata?) Great article: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
