The PCC: A streetcar named success
In the early 20th Century, the streetcar (trolley) ruled urban transit, but by 1934, streetcars were in trouble. While streamline design was sweeping North America, streetcars still looked like boxes and were noisy, drafty, and usually slow. Transit executives formed the Presidents Conference Committee to design a new streetcar that could lure riders back. Quiet, faster, and sleek, the 'PCC' car was a big leap forward, and was catching on when World War Il interrupted production. After the war, suburban growth and transit economics doomed all but a few North American streetcar systems. Still, the PCC is widely viewed as the best streetcar ever designed-attractive, comfortable, and easy to maintain. Almost 5,000 PCCS, built between 1936 and 1952, served 33 North American cities.

honestly this is the worst kind of union busting; @timoflegend.bsky.social acted like a coward and let his managers union bust for him, whether he was aware he was doing this or not, it happened

"Anti-union people seem[ed] to have absolutely no boundaries. They would post multiple pages as Slack comments gushing about Tim and how much Double Fine meant
to them and how hurt they were about the union attempt. This was done by employees that were both eligible and ineligible for the union. They would often also demand specific answers from pro-union people even though those could not reply freely.
"...Seeing how quickly people who supported unions in other companies turned against their colleagues who are pro-union made me think that a union was very much needed at Double Fine, because it was clear that those anti-union people in no way would have the back of their colleagues if anything bad happened and it became an us-versus-them situation."

US military to livestream firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter
Washington (United States) (AFP) - The execution by firing squad of convicted military base shooter Nidal Hasan will be livestreamed, a Pentagon official said Thursday, after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said it would be carried out in "public."

I think if you’re pivoting to being an AI doomer from a trans doomer you should at least learn what a model harness is

Alejandra Caraballo@ @esqueer.net • 48m
All that's left is voting and that's too slow to stop this process. Agentic Al and coding harnesses didn't even exist in 2024. Now they're solving fields medal worthy problems. The political power side is moving too slow for a tech that is moving too fast.

30 House Democrats and Independent Sen.

reading Vector Media by Impett and Offert and am very fixated on this paragraph

deeply learned forms of representation, yet offer a mode of vision that seems removed from tangible interaction. Though, in truth, the relationship to touch is far more complex: from digital pictures that lack physicality to heavily textured paintings or bas-reliefs that invite, even simulate, a tactile experience, as in Bernard Berenson's
(1896) "tactile values" or David Freedberg's (2017) account of bodily
empathy.
Computer vision, shaped in Marr's shadow, rests on an unstated assumption of continuity between vision and pictures, overlooking that it is fundamentally modeling a medium (photography), perhaps even a genre (amateur smartphone photography), rather than a sense (vision). Computer vision's latent theory of photography, as Malevé and Sluis (2023) put it, stems from precisely these "ontological conflations between 'real world' and photograph, human eye and camera, snapshot and visual stimulus." Or, we might add, OpenAl's conflation of TikTok-slop video generation and world simulation. Conceptual or even philosophical contradictions that, as Agre suggested, tend to surface precisely in Al's highly material, technical impasses.
2
Notes
This chapter owes a large debt to the connections between the history of philosophies of vision (especially those of the European Enlightenment) and computer vision first laid out by the art historian Michael Baxandall (1995, 60), who described neural networks as a "plastic, reactive, association machine that would have pleased Condillac more than Locke."
OpenAl's use of that term initially described something close to a technical report, a kind of self-published scientific paper, typeset in LaTex and hosted on arxiv; it now describes something between a blog post and a product launch page.
It is difficult to overstate the genuine surprise felt by the techr

I love how much this show is anti Rafael Mandelman specifically

UN supervised
A CRITICAL EXHIBITION
UnSupervised began with a specific, local frustration. As the election looms to replace what was once Harvey Milk's political role, supervisor of The Castro, we reflected on those who have held that office in recent years. We feel strongly we have been let down and sold out by the previous two men who have carried that torch, and the lack of community based leadership they have displayed.
This feeling extends well beyond District 8, and we're guessing if you're in this very Queer place reading this, you feel similarly.
The art in this show makes clear that the frustration, rage, and grief is collective, and does not stop at the district line. What started as a question about one city seat inevitably becomes a question about power: who holds it, who it protects, and what can those without it do when it is used against us?
This exhibition, like our minds and hearts, weaves through the mire of the American political landscape. May this cross section of experiences, perspectives, and mediums allow each of us to connect, learn, and process.
Hopefully, you'll find inspiration from past wisdom to take action.
Thirteen Queer artists from around the Bay Area express their frustration with what we're expected to call leadership, explore the impact that has on their lives and the lives of their communities, and use past and present inspiration to celebrate and imagine the ways in which we have, are, and can create a better world together.
As you stand here, in the very spot where Harvey Milk and his comrades mobilized a movement that changed history for Queer people, consider the movements we need now, and those already underway. What can you do, in whatever small way and within the world you exist, to spark the change you wish to see?
