On our way to GSA Connects in Denver, it's hard not to get some photos of the imposing Capulin Volcano in the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field. A drive to the top gives great views of the cinder cone and other smaller cones in the area.

The Escarpment doesn't extend that far west in Michigan. It is exposed at Fayette, then extends south through the Door Peninsula.

Could be from a few sources; hydrothermal vents (most likely), dissolved sulfate in the water itself, possible atmospheric photolysis.

Too many people freak out over the safety of mineral specimens. As long as you don't eat/snort them and wash hands after handling, they're no more dangerous than getting out of bed in the morning.
