It's not a question of old or new, the NES/SNES era were figuring the roles of gaming, had pixel art, arcade difficulty hiding storage limitation.
PS2 and DS were 3D capable, were the era of standardized control, had long form content...
Sharing the same term (retro) doesn't work.
