So we posted a YT video regarding a linguistics trend that we are against. We got flagged, and people refused to watch the video in full. So, here is a statement. Alt Text is available. TW: use of derogatory and bigoted terms for educational purposes (e.g. sp**ky, gh*tto) #Linguistics

It appears that, despite me being accused of not watching EtymologyNerd's video in full, people who dislike my video have not watched mine in full. They stop at the 51 second mark, where I initially say, "saying we should accept that the term is coming back is BS." They don't listen to the intersectional example I mention regarding "that's so gay", how I talk about the intersectional impact of slurs and terms we take for granted (ex. "queer"). So, because people refuse to watch the video in full, plus refuse to read the comments regarding the discussion that occurred or the announcement from yesterday, the video will be unlisted.

Again, use intersectionality to think about this: If you're content with the use of other derogatory terms rooted in slurs against marginalised people (ex. "queer", "ghetto", "spook(y)"), if you refuse to look up or listen to others look up the etymology of said terms and note how they are rooted in discrimination, then you are part of the problem. If something like this isn't okay against one marginalised people, we shouldn't be okay with it against others. And to tell marginalised people to change their perspective and wording to accommodate those who will not listen only alienates marginalised people more. We've seen this same discourse, impact, and harm against Black folks and communities regarding various terms, including "spook(y)", as well as mentioning marginalised peoples' history and fights for respect and rights. This shows a whole other trend that EtymologyNerd did not note: the trend of minimising marginalised people.

To dislike, refuse to listen in full, and to minimise the voice and perspective of those impacted proves both my and EtymologyNerd's points. While he began his short saying that we should "accept" that people will be ableist and harmful, however, that people are somehow using a term "outside" of its derogatory context, I will not.

I will apologise to EtymologyNerd for accusing he was content with the trend given how I misunderstood his wording. However, if your reactions to a victim of the word in question is to dislike, say, "get over it", and refuse to listen to a victim's account and examples, then you prove to be part of something outside of the trend he noted. If you're a fan of EtymologyNerd and recognise that he was not trying to claim the resurgence is a good thing and continue to do this behaviour against someone who is a direct victim of the trend he noted, then you prove the following:

1. the r-slur has not lost its ableist and harmful connotation, even in slang.

2. Disabled people and other marginalised people are not listened to when calling out discriminatory behaviour.

3. Marginalised people are forced to educate those who refuse to listen, and when we will not be a model minority and word things in a way that doesn't make others' fragile understandings feel damaged, we are disliked or worse.

Phenomena of slurs and other derogatory terms growing in vacuums is rooted in discriminatory culture and generational bigotry. We learn from our peers, elders, and media what is and isn't okay, and when we are raised in vacuums of bigoted culture we then feel convinced that said bigotry, from covert and culturally accepted to overt and hostile, are okay. Me being raised extremely racist, anti-LGBTQIA2S+, sexist, etc. (hyper conservative/MAGA), you can only imagine what terms I thought were okay before having friends who are part of the demographics most often harmed in these instances (ex. Black, Latino, LGBTQIA2S+, Disabled, etc.), along with realising that I am Disabled -- given my abuser refused to let me be diagnosed while also assuming my symptoms to claim me better than others in my family that she abused. If we cannot recognise our faults, if we cannot listen to others when they say something is harmful, then we prove marginalised people right -- that we are not listened to, that our perspectives are minimised, and that we are dehumanised for the sake of a bit.

If you want to be against the trend, then listen. In full. Otherwise, you prove another trend: you won't listen to those you hurt, intentionally or not.
