Software is one of the few places these models shine for a few reasons. There's a huge corpus of structured open data to train on, correctness is verifiable, and the generated code should be readable for a human but it's not intended for human consumption the way a photo or essay is.

Unfortunately we need some transphobic people to vote for us. But the good news is that we do that by sticking to our guns and advancing trans rights.

This isn’t a hypothetical, it’s proven: abortion restrictions are unpopular even in red states. Republicans own it and advocate for their beliefs. People will fucking vote for them anyway. Hardcore pro-choice people will never vote for a republican but “moderately” pro-choice people will.

Insane transphobes will never vote for a democrat. “Moderate” transphobes will suspect dems of sympathizing with trans folks and respect honesty over triangulation and may support a democrat anyway because of other issues they agree with.

When a newsroom uses a spellchecker they’re not at risk of making their news story factually incorrect. If that risk existed, reputable newsrooms wouldn’t use them.

Feels a little bit like Mayor Wilson is doing the Obama thing of taking conservative critiques seriously and addressing them. They will not appreciate her “pragmatism“, they will lie and say she defunded the police.

In this use case I think “thinking” or “reasoning” are fine words to apply, colloquially, to the process an agent is executing. What other terms make sense to use?

That doesn’t mean the AI is conscious but a decade ago only a human could have looked at a strangers list of downloads and say “hmm they probably want all the Nintendo roms in one folder, the pdfs their kids school sent them in another…”.

Underperforming implies it’s happening. Most people’s idea of creativity is like, a spark of genius that creates a touching work of art. AI may never do that. ”Creative problem solving” can also be as mundane as “organize my downloads folder into sensible subfolders” and an AI can do that.

Yeah most people don’t understand inflation and if they were to describe what they want it would be deflation of everything except maybe wages.

Honestly there’s a great answer for “centrists” running for office in red states which is “the federal government has no business dictating the eligibility requirements of youth sports leagues”. I’d prefer they defend the dignity of trans kids but they could sidestep the issue if they wanted to.

If an actual working lie detector were ever invented it would be such a world changing creation it's hard to fathom all the consequences. There would be kiosks of them at every bank, airport, car dealership, etc.

Scientists have been using machine learning models for years: that may help them cure cancer but it won’t be anthropic doing it. Maybe Claude will help them write code faster and thus contribute but claudes contribution would be more akin to Jiras contribution.

“AI is a normal technology“ was incredibly prescient. Nobody claimed that cloud computing or mobile phones would cure cancer or conquer the galaxy. LLMs and generative AI is a technology that has some use cases where it offers modest convenience, mostly for white collar workers.

Where a mandate could work is on bike shares. Instead of an individual mandate you mandate that the corporation has to provide a helmet in some way. Whether people choose to use it is on them.

This distinction is the whole reason for all the discourse. "Cyclists in the US should wear helmets, but that doesn't mean there should be a law about it" is the correct take.

Institutional support is really true. I think it’s unfair to say she isn’t done anything though. Her work on renter protections is commendable. IMO she’s not a good communicator. The Seattle Times is not going to report favorably on renter protections, she needs a 30 second vertical video about it

Also Seattle just hates our mayors in general. The last time we reelected an incumbent was 2006.

The city is pretty evenly split between ”centrists” and progressives. She barely won and faces a hostile city council. There is a lot of conservative media in Seattle like the Seattle Times and our local Sinclair station trying to create scandal. Shes not as charismatic as most electeds.

Cold blooded murder is bad, I agree. The United Healthcare CEO should have spent time behind bars to reconsider his life choices instead. I hope we get that kind of society because it would be better for all involved.

The alternative to democracy is violence. I strongly prefer democracy. Unfortunately due to the outsized influence of wealth in our political and legal system democracy is breaking down. And it’s the wealthy who have made this system.

captainawesome.bsky.social @captainawesome.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
When wealthy people buy elections in order to continue profiting off of massive amounts of suffering this sort of thing is inevitable. When wealthy people are legally untouchable and never held to account for their wrongs this of thing is inevitable.

I'm not a committed pacifist but I'm sympathetic to their beliefs so I've thought about it for two seconds and realized there are pacifist ways to help people who are being invaded. Sanctions against the aggressor, food aid, etc.

Similar to transphobes not giving a shit about women’s sports, covid weirdos do not actually care about education. Trying to placate them or ”acknowledge their concerns“ will always fail because they have no actual concerns, just petty grievances

The promise of smart devices failed to live up to their reality. There are useful features and a lot of potential. Extensible/programmable devices should get better with time as people tinker with them. Instead they’re designed to spy on us and extract subscription payments.

I don’t think an employer ever looked at any of my evaluations. Had I applied to a graduate program they might have. Personally I appreciated it because instead of gaming out a high score you just have to do the work and demonstrate competency.

My college had narrative evaluations and everyone thinks that means “there are no grades” but what it actually means is that my transcript will forever describe how I suck at reading topological proofs. It’s more detailed and even if you do well in a class there will be mention of your shortcomings.

The “real” zuck is not an MMA chud, nor is he a philanthropist who believes in the power of education. There is no “real” zuck. There is only a pathetic husk of a man who will do anything for control over others. Same for all the others.

I think the only way to become a billionaire is by coveting money and power above all else and when it’s opportunistic to believe one thing they will. When it’s opportunistic to believe something else they will.

All sports fans have complaints about the organizers. Many of those complaints are legitimate. Its not like fans of American football love the NFL. There are similar complaints from gamers about the games industry, or cinephiles and Hollywood.

There is no education that could cure the narcissism and psychopathy of Thiel or Zuck. As individuals, they need therapy/treatment. As a society, we need safeguards against any one person amassing their levels of power and influence.

I’m being a little jokey about “HN comments“ but I really do wish more of my colleagues thought about the social impacts of what we create, the power structures in society, the value of collective organizing, etc. Even if they land somewhere else than me, it’s the indifference that pains me.
