as a lover of yiddish these types of people make me nuts. they will claim "yiddish is dead" while burying it alive. our traditional diglossic system is repugnant to their tastes so they try to destroy it. people like OP should familiarize themselves with the literature before making posts like this
"it was not spoken outside of the temple for centuries"
technically untrue, hebrew did continue being spoken as a lingua franca between jewish groups, but it is true that no one spoke it *as a first language*
"Yiddish was violently stamped out in "Israel" when it was first created, and the language has been critically endangered since..."
"violently stamped out" is maybe a bit strong and imo erases the efforts of yiddishists in israel, but it is true that israel suppressed yiddish alongside other judaic languages, and can and should do more today to support them. However, the narrative presented here conveniently ignores several significant events in the mid 20th century that possibly also contributed to a decline in speakers of these languages. Also yiddish is not critically endangered! yiddish, while certainly suffering from a tremendous and horrific loss of native speakers due to 20th century events we are apparently not talking about, does have a *growing* base of speakers, which places it in a better position than *most of the world's language* which you would think a ***linguistics grad student studying indigenous languages would know.***
"The language is inextricably tied to "Israel's" history and modern identity"
The language has been used for jewish writing continually since before the common era, but yeah youre right too tied to a less than 100 year old state
"Critically, it has also played a massive role in the homogenization of Judaism in the diaspora."

previously I had tried to ignore personal statements about this individual, but as here they personalize their view of hebrew I too will respond in kind. I cannot imagine someone who serous interfaces with judaism to reach this view. You have never studied the mishnah? you have never read a biblical commentenary, or even the bible itself?? you have never once read something from the hundreds of years long jewish traditions of poetry, philosophy, music, science, culture??? even an appreciation of modern yiddish literature requires at the same time an appreciation of hebrew, simply because of how central it is to jewish life. when you read tevye the dairyman, his biblical malapropisms are sourced from the hebrew bible. benjamin the third is itself a reference to benjamin of tudela's hebrew travel log. these self-called "yiddishists" will come here and seek to destroy our people's rich diglossic tradition just because it gives them the ick. "sometimes prayer." Get real.
