Update on that model I was working on: IT FUNCTIONS! I have a lot of notes on how to improve on my next one, numerous little gripes, but for what it is I'm very happy with it and actually finishing something feels good.

I'VE GOOPED! It's been a long time since I've actually worked on anything much at all, but I am Finally going back into making myself an avatar for VRChat, as much as I also loathe VRChat but y'know, friends there and all. I still have a lot to do but I'm in a good enough mood to post WIPs for now.

... Still not entirely sure what little Proto-me was intending for the original design, but Yeah we sure did change shit up over the past maybe 10-ish years.

And finally, we have my current design, which in spite of having drawn twice I haven't actually put to a model yet, now featuring an updated outfit, lamps for the upper arms instead of the shoulders, and the addition of yellow to the palette.

The full t-pose of my current design, the main changes being the obvious lava lamp parts, new outfit, and also a swapped right hand which changes depending on who's back-seating while I (Toaster) drive our body around like a fucking Mazda.

V7 time, this one's the 3D model that I spent the absolute shortest amount of time and also the latest. (for now.)

Here is the only picture of V7, a t-pose with non-curvy lines for the ports and a purple an orange outline, the main problem with it being... well, this is when I realized that having lava lamps for the shoulders would be hell since the motion of them just would be really hard to finagle into functioning from everything I could find on sections that actively bend a lot. I still haven't done a V8 with actual lava lamp sections though.

Here we see the ill-fated start of my attempts to put lava lamps in my model. (Still haven't managed it to this day.) Also the start of the heart thing! Which is fun, specifically took influence from Homestuck for that since I was a Homestuck classpect obsessed kid.

The V6 model, now featuring hearts on the back of the hands, a heart on the chest, and glowing thigh and shoulder sections, as well as smoother more wavy connecting ports. I never did get around to adding lava lamp stuff even though I had the thought at this point.

Another V6 picture, this time with the start of a sweater and I think a belt or a skirt? This is the part where I realized I didn't like the wavy ports. It was a fun experiment, but not something I feel like repeating.

Oh yeah, I also re-did that "about to punch the screen" pic from V3 while I was at it, no eyes again, this time featuring wiggly limbs because I Love exaggerated animations and mattes at the top and bottom once more, the top one behind and the bottom one in front but with the left hand reaching forward past it. I like this pose a lot actually, it's probably the single pose I'm happiest with from all of this experimentation.

Again, I did say I did the most with V5, especially with the fact that I actually set it up to be able to separate the sections.

The V5 model from a sort of backwards-side view, seen with mattes behind framing them pulling their hammer out of their floating forearm which is doing an "OK" hand sign. It may be late, but if you're reading this: Gottem.

Next we have the fifth version, which I probably did the most with in spite of having some of the least changes, only really adding boots, a small jacket, and weird detached sleeves, as well as increasing the size of the eyes.

Here we have my fourth version, where I really started to get comfortable with my new virtual skin, expanding on the separating sections idea by, well, just cutting up my model a bunch more and changing the body colors from the gray and purple of version 3 to gray and black.

The fourth iteration of my model standing in a VRChat instance, its body sections off to separate at the neck, shoulders, forearms just below the elbows, wrists, starts of each fingers, the bottom of the torso, the top of the hips, the thighs just below the hips and just above the knees, and just above the ankles, the sections alternating between black and gray with about the same helmet as before with a thinner rim at the bottom, a flat shader on it and a strange line down the middle from a texture issue I never really figured out the cause of.

Here's the next version, plus some pics of my avatar crawling around to test the movement that felt Really Weird to do. You can already see the progression starting with the wider hips, higher jacket, and actual usage of shaders plus manual shading on the clothes.

My model standing without the eyes and clothes, as well as with lighter shading that shows a bit more of the very early geometry. I didn't even know how to make it shade smooth back then.

And now I enter the realm of 3D. I got really into VRChat for a long time, saw a lot of funny videos and stuff, and that's what got me into modeling. Actually went to a couple of Rael the Protogen's meetups (Not @ ing because attention scares me) and I had a great time.

The very earliest semi-complete version of my model, and boy it is... A Mess. Similar to the last 2D version without the shoulder spikes and microphone, jacket's a bit longer, also lacking the glow and with bits of the bones actually showing through. While I was actually using it I noticed that parts of the mesh were inverted on the fingers and did not know how to fix it at the time.

Here's my second iteration, actually originally a Minecraft skin since I was getting very into making skins back then and the first appearance of detachable body parts. I actually made a decent number for family and friends, maybe I'll reuse the designs somewhere.

A tall thin and lanky figure standing straight with a body made of distinct sections, black with purple glowing outlines and simple purple, the top half of the head being that black with purple outlines with purple vertical lines for eyes, the sections separated by light gray metal anywhere they would touch with the arms, legs, and head additionally being detached, floating separate from the main body, the parts where they would connect having distinct circular ports with matching ones on the shoulders and neck, as well as the bottom of the hips. (though not shown.) Being able to take myself apart ended up becoming kind of a main theme years later, and it's nice seeing the idea reflected so early

Another D&D character that I finished a while ago, her pose is also taken from JJK, Frances. Her whole thing is that she's Extremely Cursed and, seeing how immortals don't take responsibility for the curses they place, wants to take that role. Heavily influenced by JJK and Frieren.
