Surely local batteries can mitigate this by allowing supermarkets to use power generated during the day when the sun’s gone down (assuming excess energy has been generated)? They’ve come down a lot in price so seems like it’d be financially advantageous over the medium term for the supermarkets.

This means the intermittency problem of renewables is hugely mitigated and the UK’s plans for growth in this area should mean we have great energy sovereignty by the early 2030s without relying on the dwindling North Sea reserves.

@therestpolitics.bsky.social Rory clearly has developed deep misgivings about renewable energy recently but I feel his criticism is missing a crucial part of the jigsaw which is the growth in battery storage and its related plunge in cost.

He seems to have no idea about the growth in battery storage either. Or any plan that’ll make energy cheaper than renewables by the end of the next decade…
