It is astonishingly blind to have been able to imagine 30 live ins along with 30 other brothers could throw parties with free flowing booze and drugs to 100s of 18-22 year olds and think there weren't rapes. What a scary place to end up drunk at 2am. I really was blind.

“I was once asked if I had any ideas for a really scary reality TV show. I have one reality show that would really make your hair stand on end: "C-Students from Yale."
George W. Bush has gathered around him upper-crust C-students who know no history or geography, plus not-so-closeted white supremacists, aka Christians, and plus, most frighteningly, psychopathic personalities, or PPs, the medical term for smart, personable people who have no consciences.
To say somebody is a PP is to make a perfectly respectable diagnosis, like saying he or she has appendicitis or athlete's foot . . .
PPs are presentable, they know full well the suffering their actions may cause others, but they do not care. They cannot care because they are nuts. They have a screw loose! . . .
So many of these heartless PPs now hold big jobs in our federal government, as though they were leaders instead of sick. They have taken charge of communications and the schools, so we might as well be Poland under occupation.
They might have felt that taking our country into an endless war was simply something decisive to do. What has allowed so many PPs to rise so high in corporations, and now in government, is that they are so decisive. They are going to do something every fuckin' day and they are not afraid. Unlike normal people, they are never filled with doubts, for the simple reasons that they don't give a fuck what happens next. Simply can't. Do this! Do that! Mobilize the reserves! Privatize the public schools! Attack Iraq! Cut health care! Tap everybody's telephone! Cut taxes on the rich! Build a trillion-dollar missile shield! Fuck habeas corpus and the Sierra Club and In These Times, and kiss my ass!
There is a tragic flaw in our precious Constitution, and I don't know what can be done to fix it. This is it: Only nut cases want to be president.”

Why do most of these Tech guys sound like they dropped out of college before they finished their Liberal Arts requirements? Oh, right. Who needs Kant, Hegel, or Husserl when one can read the wisdom of the Zuck.
In Zuckerberg’s manifesto, he notes how “historically, hoping that an absolute power will benevolently provide for humanity if sufficiently enlightened has not led to safe or positive outcomes.”

#EconSky Good advice. Paul Volcker on that relationship.
Finally, Fed chairman Martin, whose restrictive monetary policy Nixon (advised by then professor Arthur Burns) had blamed for his 1960 election defeat, retired from the Fed in early 1970.
Burns then became the new chairman. He was a highly respected business cycle expert and certainly close to the president. But to me the new Fed leadership seemed almost perversely willing to ease policy, reducing money market interest rates, even when the dollar was under pressure. More than once I pleaded with my longtime associate and friend, Fed governor Dewey Daane, to encourage the chairman not to ease when I was scheduled to meet with my foreign counterparts.
In the end, none of those measures—South African gold sales, activating SDRs, or even a mildly restrained monetary policy—would be enough to save the dollar or address the underlying payments deficits. The competitive position of the United States, reflected in a declining trade surplus, was simply not strong enough to offset the large government expenditures abroad and chronic capital outflows. A more fundamental approach would be necessary.
I had great respect for Arthur Burns as a student of business cycles. And I know he also felt strongly, even emotionally, that the independence of the Federal Reserve was critically important—he would often compare it to the Supreme Court. It has since become clear that he was under persistent pressure from the White House. The extent to which that influenced his policies remains unknown to me. After all, central bankers have been congenitally reluctant to “take away the punchbowl” and begin restrictive action when the inflation process is still nascent. In any event, the Fed wasn’t going to save the dollar.

“The pounds only make Elvis more imposing”

Elvis then had a month off before heading out on a seven-day swing through the Midwest and West. Reviewers at his first two stops in Kansas City and Omaha were much kinder to Elvis. Jess Ritter in the Kansas City Star on April 22 claimed, “From the moment he strode onstage last night, though, he proved clearly that, at age 41, he is still one of the most charismatic entertainers in America,” and in Omaha, reviewer Doug Smith noted, “The King is still the King, despite of reports that he has been depressed, debilitated and overweight. Indeed, Presley is maybe 30 or 40 pounds over his playing weight … But the pounds only make Elvis more imposing, if slightly less mobile.”

But out west Denise Kusel wasn’t pulling any punches in her review of Elvis’ Long Beach show on April 25:

“Watching Elvis at the Long Beach Arena Sunday night was like watching a parody of a dying legend … mostly it was like watching a chubby puppet wrapped in a double chin and a foreign body work through a series of Elvis songs. But heroes die and even the best sunrise melts into sunset and then darkness.”

A bit of a stretch on your point but for a fun trip down memory lane (and kind of a starting point for market worship) here's a reminder of Greenspan as Ayn Rand acotlye in 1974. Ah the good old days when philosophy (or the lack thereof) matterred. newrepublic.com/article/9149...
Miss Rand appears to have done more in shaping his views than did Dr. Arthur Burns, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, a former teacher. Bespectacled Mr. Greenspan agrees that his 20-year association with Miss Rand helped to wean him from an earlier liberalism and other "mistaken policies."

"Alan is my disciple philosophically," Russian-born Miss Rand, 69, author of The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, said recently. To put the thing in context consider recent developments. The world economy and banking system are under great strain. Food is everywhere short, and the oil producers have quadrupled the price with the effect of imposing a kind of excise tax of $60 or $70 billion annually on the consumers, at the same time that the producers' extraordinary new income is sloshing about the hard-pressed international exchange system.

What is "science" anyway? What does the word mean? (sarcasm alert) According to Humpty Dumpty
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less."

"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."

"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master—that’s all."

As with climate change have we gone too far past a tipping point in this matter? We are led by a man who doesn't read, doesn't reflect, never self examines .. and it shows.
"It would be catastrophic to become a nation of technically competent people who have lost the ability to think critically, to examine themselves, and to respect the humanity and diversity of others. And unless we support these endeavor, it is such a nation that we may well live. It is therefore urgent now to support curricular efforts aimed at producing citizens who can take charge of their own reasoning, who can see the different and foreign not as a threat to be resisted but as an invitation to...expand their own minds and capacity for citizenship"

That was hysterical.
Trump said Gaza could be the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

Well, I don’t share his vision in that regard. I believe that Gaza should be led by Gazans, and they should rebuild based on what they want without corruption and terrorism. The same with Yemen, the same with Syria, the same with Iraq. All of a sudden, you can imagine a Middle East where you land in Dubai, and you make your way to Beirut, down to Tel Aviv, to Gaza City, to Cairo.

It’s like the domino theory, but in reverse.

Yeah, yeah. Exactly.

It's terrible and yet unsurprising that the current administration is far more concerned over the how might things seem to the electorate than how things are in reality. Seeming transcends being. Someone should write a book about this. Oh, right.

If you didn't live Nixon it wouldn't come to mind in an off the cuff conversation. I'm a geezer so I remember. Worth noting though we used to put many Cabinet members in prison, even the AG (who had his wife kidnapped 👀). But since that pardon, not so much. Ford's pardon was not a good omen.

If we are not all under the law as similar creatures... horror is sure to manifest
I could not see where his wound was, as I kneeled on one knee over him; but, I could see that he was dying of a wound from a sharp point.

"`I am a doctor, my poor fellow,' said I. `Let me examine it.'

"`I do not want it examined,' he answered; `let it be.'

"It was under his hand, and I soothed him to let me move his hand away. The wound was a sword-thrust, received from twenty to twenty- four hours before, but no skill could have saved him if it had been looked to without delay. He was then dying fast. As I turned my eyes to the elder brother, I saw him looking down at this handsome boy whose life was ebbing out, as if he were a wounded bird, or hare, or rabbit; not at all as if he were a fellow-creature.

"`How has this been done, monsieur?' said I.

"`A crazed young common dog! A serf! Forced my brother to draw upon him, and has fallen by my brother's sword--like a gentleman.'

"There was no touch of pity, sorrow, or kindred humanity, in this answer. The speaker seemed to acknowledge that it was inconvenient to have that different order of creature dying there, and that it would have been better if he had died in the usual obscure routine of his vermin kind. He was quite incapable of any compassionate feeling about the boy, or about his fate.

"The boy's eyes had slowly moved to him as he had spoken, and they now slowly moved to me.

"`Doctor, they are very proud, these Nobles; but we common dogs are proud too, sometimes. They plunder us, outrage us, beat us, kill us; but we have a little pride left, sometimes. She--have you seen her, Doctor?'
