Sound the fog horn, it’s #WorldMaritimeDay! 📯⛵ Llewellyn Day Lothrop (1836-1922) owned a chandlery shop in Gloucester & patented inventions like a fishing swivel and “Lothrop’s Mechanical Fog Horn.” He made this exhibit case for the Columbian Exposition, the World’s Fair of 1892.

#HappyBirthday to artist Kilby Webb Elwell (1841–1916)! Elwell was born in Gloucester in 1841 and, except for his service in the Civil War, spent his entire life on Cape Ann. Elwell enjoyed success painting landscapes and signs for local businesses.

#HappyBirthday to artist Felicie Waldo Howell (1892-1968)! Howell was a dedicated, professional artist who worked on Cape Ann in the 1910s–1930s. She maintained a summer studio in Rocky Neck in a rambling conglomeration of old fish processing buildings known as “Wonsonhurst.”
