Finally home after a great #defcon33. Huge thanks to the organizers of @defcon.bsky.social and all the Goons for putting on such a great con. And special thanks to the @defconpolicy.bsky.social crew for making me feel so welcome. See you all next year!

I would challenge developers to think broader than this. We also need outfits that are fierce, bad ass, tough, relaxed, and [checks notes] fleek.

Just remember that Security is like an Ogre. It’s cumbersome, no one wants to think about it, everyone assumes it lives in a swamp and that it will block you when you try to cross a bridge. Also, it has layers.

The best part is when some senior engineer says “Hey can you get this software for us, we need it for something we’re doing next week?” and you have to explain why buying this thing you’ve never heard of from a vendor you’ve never talked to has a less than 0% chance of happening.

@cdprojektred.com You can stop now. We get that you feel bad about how the release went, and that we laughed at you. 2.1 was great, Phantom Liberty was incredible. You don’t have to keep fixing it. You can let it go, we forgive you. Just go make Witcher 4 or something, it’s ok.

The problem with “thing you know” is that the service/app that you are authenticating to has to know and thus store that “thing you know” and it has been repeatedly shown that web services are REALLY BAD at storing secrets. The benefit of passkeys is that it gives the services no secrets to store.

I got tired of OpenID and decided to write about RSA padding. What could be simpler than RSA padding? Except I made the mistake of asking whether RSA PKCS1v1.5 padding is probably secure and it sent me down a rabbit hole of insanity.

Oh it’s definitely an issue but it’s been true for résumés since they were invented. Professional ethics is more rare than you would hope. LI just lets us see this “at scale” and marvel at how bad it is. I don’t think there’s anything to “do” about it unfortunately.

I meant that you should tell the friend that reached out to you what your view of the events on that person’s LI was, not that you should do anything publicly with it. Let them decided if it’s just exaggeration or more. If I was the hiring manager that’s what I would want.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? (Repeat previous answer) The amount of websites and applications that run on Amazon’s cloud platform (also Google’s and Microsoft’s to a lesser degree). Every couple years they’ll have an outage and half the internet just stops working.

I often remark to people how incredible it is that computers work as well and as often as they do. Once you consider the multiple thousands of different engineers and programmers working separately for dozens of companies on every level, from hardware to software, it’s amazing they boot at all.

"-le" is a forgotten suffix in English - it's integrated so far into words that we no longer register it. It indicates continuousness: to sparkLE is to repeatedly spark, to scribbLE is to continuously scribe, etc. Which implies that to chortLE is to repeatedly do something called a chort.
