#TDIH - February 23, 1909 - History was made on the frozen waters of Baddeck Bay, Nova Scotia. The AEA Silver Dart, piloted by J.A.D. McCurdy, lifted off the ice and flew nearly 800 meters—marking the first powered, controlled flight in Canada and the British Empire.

There’s a little girl seated in front of me on this flight who’s absolutely fascinated with the plane and all the goings on before take off. Asked her if she wanted to be a pilot, and she pointed at the de-icer and said she wanted to be that guy. It’s the simple joys
