“Expand to continue reading” exclusively in the sense that I must grow to take in new ideas.

Been watching more and the puppet episode was good! Definitely in the zany Star Trek tradition, which isn't my favorite flavor of Trek, but well done in that tradition and really fun. Highlight of the season for me so far.

It was the scariest episode of Star Trek I've ever seen.

I just watched episode 2 and I get that there’s foreshadowing happening but it was very strange that they didn’t try to explain what the phenomenon was.

In that case it's not the conservative media machine any more, right? Your thesis is that there's a part of the electorate that has had their brains turned to mush? That seems plausible... Still seems like the chart is clearer evidence that people are mad about high prices — justified or not.

If the conservative media were to blame, wouldn't we expect the blue line to dip down again when Trump came back into office?

Bob @cantoni.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
The conservative media machine's been around a long time. I think people just really, really hate inflation.

You did a good job interacting with him and clarifying that he was not interested in understanding the distinction between EA and rationalist groups

Makes total sense; Vercel's pretty good for stuff like this!

Where do you host one-shot stuff like this? I don't have a solid stack for stuff that doesn't need real production scale.

Some sanity from Marco about the importance of letting people in your life just be people, without insisting they have the correct political opinions. marco.org/2026/09/04/b...

Torn between wanting to share this with my normie friends and feeling like it'll freak them out too much. It's crazy! It's also a really compelling story. It feels like watching a movie! But a scary movie! www.youtube.com/watch?v=87Dy...

It’s unfortunate that being shitty and condescending is the part that people like, about whatever candidate on whatever side of the spectrum.

These kinds of purity rituals are very bad for everyone involved. They don’t stop — they only get more intense — until people stand up to the would-be purifiers.

I'm glad that they're keeping the Codex app. I don't like the omni-app approach, but at least they kept the best foundation they have.

This seems broadly true, but I don't see it in this case — feels like Matt is trying to influence public policy. What do you think would be better here? I guess the thing that bothers me from pundits is that it's always "we should do this" and not "here's what I'm curious about and learning about"

Seeing these claims gain traction in the NYT is making me lose faith in the NYT rather than lose faith in Andy Masley.

Yes. I'm very skeptical there will be a moat big enough for the foundational model companies. Though for now I'm finding $200/mo very reasonable to get the best models.

I'm also appreciative of @moskov.goodventures.org for funding Andy's work — even though it cuts against what Dustin might want to see happen. It's rare to see people devoted to truth as a pursuit and goal in itself, like both of these folks are.

Again wishing Blue Sky allowed users to silence retweets. Retweets without quotes are 99% low quality, often political ragebait, and by definition include no thoughts from the people I follow. Not sure why this isn't an option already.

Insisting you know the motives of your political enemies is pretending to be able to read minds. It’s corrosive to public discourse. It also makes it harder to win, because you stop being able to understand why people support the person you’ve vilified. I wish people wouldn’t do it.

I have EA friends who supported DOGE and supported USAID cuts in particular. I didn’t support either, but I don’t think my friends are racists.

All reasonable points. But I don’t think this is at all unusual for Jamelle, who routinely speaks this way about anyone to his right. I want reasonable, well-intentioned people to lower the temperature of the discourse when possible. I have the idea that doing so helps us all in the long run.

I appreciate the response. If you can point me to the evidence for this, I will do my best to make Andy pay attention to it. Or if you don't find that valuable, I will pay serious attention to it myself.

One possible argument: there's been lots of research; it hasn't shown infrasound causing harm without audible sound components. Better to spend limited resources making sure datacenters aren't causing audible noise pollution. Maybe that’s wrong! But it’s not inconsistent with being truth-seeking.
