My colleague Sarah Batterman and others from @caryinstitute.bsky.social are organizing what looks like a great crash course on ecosystem ecology for graduate students at an exceptionally affordable cost:

#ESA2025 submissions now open for workshops, special sessions, Career Central sessions, short courses, field trips. No hybrid sessions this year. Career central sessions are new, with a second "projects in planning" poster session to be announced in February: www.esa.org/baltimore2025/

Scholander et al., from their 1965 Science paper describing the method for measuring plant water potential, on why their proof was better carried out in mangroves than redwoods:
Text from Scholander on decision to measure mangroves, rather than redwoods, in order to understand plant water potentials.

It's hard to imagine a more transformative opportunity for graduating seniors interested in climate and environmental justice, led by the truly remarkable @cavesandclimate.bsky.social at UCI:

A new one from my colleague @hsubox.bsky.social on promoting student interest in plant biology through an inquiry-based module exploring plant circadian rhythm, gene expression, and defense against insects: journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

Just read 110 special session, workshop and short course descriptions for #ESA2024. There's something for everyone and a lot to be excited about. But that was a lot of reading.

Is this answer too meta for you? In all seriousness, I am going to use Perusall this semester in my class (automated grading of student annotations of primary literature). I'll let you know how it goes.

Martin (1923) writing in Science. More than 100 years later and it does not feel that we are any closer...
What is a plant? The writer has unsuccessfully sought for a definition of hte term plant suitable to use when introducing the subject of botany to college classes.

A map from my student Ashley Agatep uses remote sensing data from NASA's ECOSTRESS mission to show the hottest neighborhoods in SF during this fall's heat dome. She made this map as part of a class in just a few hours with open source data and software. Amazing what the students can do these days...

An exciting new #isotope #ecohydrology paper from Chapman University's Dr. Emily Burt. One of the first papers to calculate ages of water as it moves through soils, streams, and trees: hess.copernicus.org/articles/27/...
Violin and inset boxplots of the young water fractions
(Fyw) for lysimeter, stream, and branch xylem water, as deter-
