#FossilFriday One of the biggest land predators (8+ tons) of all time alongside its relatives and Tyrannosaurus, the animal we all know as Carcharodontosaurus is more likely a new taxon, as the original description of Carcharodontosaurus is neither from Kem Kem nor diagnostic.

#FossilFriday Complete skeleton of Hemicyon sansaniensis, a fully carnivorous and cursorial bear from the Middle Miocene.

Keep this in mind whenever you see someone bring up the idea Tyrannosaurus had superior eyesight to other megatheropods.

#FossilFriday Arguably the most hyper-specialized of all sabretoothed predators, Barbourofelis fricki was the last and largest of the nimravids and represents their comeback as a successful macropredator lineage during the Miocene, coexisting with actual sabretoothed cats as well as Epicyon.

#FossilFriday The only known North American terror bird, Titanis first evolved around 5MYA from ancestors that colonized the continent from South America; later, around 3MYA, it became larger (300+kg) and became the largest terrestrial carnivore of southern North America until its own extinction.

Had a shower thought today about how Eurasia has an alpine macropredator that must overcome the inherent dangers of living in such a rugged habitat to hunt successfully.....(1/2)

TW for someone’s pet dog being killed For such an iconic predator, there are very, very few videos of green anacondas actually striking prey: this clip from Brazil is the best one out there. And no, I have no idea why this guy took his dogs into water either.

Python molurus in action, because archosaurs have not been the only megafaunal macropredatory sauropsids of the Cenozoic (even if giant constrictors took a very different approach from basically every other top-order carnivore).

Do note that the fossilized mount of Titanis is rather inaccurate (compare it to the much more accurate reconstruction below); it is known from only fragmentary remains, and the mount was based on ostriches or smaller terror brids rather than using other large terror birds as reference.

#FossilFriday Plithocyon (possibly Hemicyon) ursinus was a hemicyonine bear from Middle Miocene North America comparable in size to the average black bear but, unlike any extant bear but like other hemicyonines, was a digitigrade cursorial carnivore adapted to chase down large animals at speed.

Reminder that there was a raptor sabretoothed cat with heyna-like cursorial adaptations (!!) around 8 million years ago.

#FossilFriday The 150~200kg Phorusrhacos was the first-described terror bird, and is the type genus for Phorusrhacidae as a whole. Despite often being depicted with a short, tall skull, in reality it (and most larger phorusrhacids) had longer skulls.

#FossilFriday Hyainailouros sulzeri was a large (400+kg) hyainailourid hyaenodont from the Early and Middle Miocene, evolving in Africa but also colonizing Eurasia. It preyed on rhinos and proboscideans and coexisted with the equally massive Amphicyon giganteus throughout most of its range.

#FossilFriday Aside from being the biggest and most famous gorgonopsian, Inostrancevia is among the best-preserved, with two specimens (including the holotype) giving good insight into the anatomy of large gorgonopsians.

#FossilFriday First mentioned in an abstract during the 2015 SVP meeting, this giant cynognathid from the Omingonde Formation was likely a close relative of the coeval Cynognathus, but was much larger assuming it had similar proportions.

#FossilFriday Alongside spinosaurs and pliosaurs (and ichthyosaurs), the Bonarelli Event - as shown on #SurvivingEarth - also wiped out numerous dinosaur lineages on land, the biggest victims being the then-dominant carcharodontosaurs. Mapusaurus was among the last and largest of this group.

This is the FIRST ever footage of this endangered and rarely filmed shark hunting, and probably the first ever video of it in the wild. It's the most basal hammerhead species and the one with the biggest cephalofoil.

#FossilFriday Riojasuchus was a roughly 2m long ornithosuchid pseudosuchian with a distinct overbite. It lived 215MYA in the upper Los Colorados Formation along with various other pseudosuchians, despite #SurvivingEarth showing it as an environment where dinosaurs were the only large animals.
