Lots of engine revving and chants of “Chinga La Migra!” Protesters were reportedly pepper-balled at least once earlier today. Not seeing heavy police presence here at the moment.

NOW: Just arrived at the intersection of Research Blvd and Anderson Lane—near where ICE shot & wounded 29-yr-old Wilber Rafael Garces Perez earlier today. Between 300-500 people still holding intersection here. ICE is reportedly not letting Garces Perez’s family access him at the hospital.

OK folks, here’s the water panel, essentially. Execs discussing how the data center industry should learn from the oil and gas industry when it comes to leak detection. They’re also predicting the industry will move away from liquid cooling toward evaporative and refrigerant cooling models.

Mauck thinks the industry is going to see higher failure rates in terms of permitting and higher costs going forward. He says the industry has to do more to “educate the marketplace” but sees federal support as critical at the moment. He calls the data center backlash as a “specter of fear about AI”

Lipman said he expects Abbott’s data center audit order to be lifted by next year. Tax credits and tax breaks are another major theme of today’s “Datacloud” conference. I’ll be adding to this thread as I attend various panels throughout the day.

Now: I’m at an opening keynote of a data center industry conference in Austin. Local enviro orgs are protesting outside. Grassroots resistance is a major theme of Morgan Lewis partner Andy Lipman’s remarks. “Something that started on the progressive left but is now, amazingly, bipartisan,” he says 🧵

We currently live in a world in which the state is locking up people as "terrorists" for being involved in a book club and in which tech oligarchs are literally shredding books to convince you that you no longer need to read long-form works.
After a three-week trial, a jury found eight of nine protesters guilty of “providing material support to terrorists”, among other crimes. For the Sotos, this “material support” included owning a “printing press” used to print anarchist zines and being part of a leftist book club, the federal government argued. The couple had already left the scene by the time guns were drawn. All eight of the defendants sentenced so far have received unusually harsh sentences – 30 to 100 years – essentially life in prison.

Heartland Institute climate deniers extremely worried MAHA's campaign against microplastics is a slippery slope that could eventually bring climate politics into Trump's base. For now, sacrificing climate still very much remains the price of admission. www.desmog.com/2026/04/17/g...
MAHA is “wrong about everything,” according to Milloy, including its push to pressure the EPA to regulate food additives, pesticides, microplastics, and PFAS, or forever chemicals — all of which have been linked to serious health risks.

“It’s only a matter of time before they become interested in climate,” Milloy said. “The microplastics scare is actually a climate-op, right? It’s another way to get to the fossil fuel industry and to get to the oil and gas industry because that’s where plastic comes from — the petrochemical industry.”As of now, it’s unclear if Milloy’s alarm will materialize into MAHA shifting its sights to targeting the fossil fuel industry for producing emissions, especially now that the EPA has repealed the endangerment finding, which concludes that greenhouse gas emissions are a threat to human health and welfare.

Still, at the panel Milloy remained adamant. “[MAHA] is not science-based and the science is what I care about. It is very disheartening to me,” he said in closing. “If they succeed with microplastics, they’re going to cause real problems…They’re going to get to climate.”
