Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald is a shoddily made celebrity tribute doc that glazes over any inconvenient or uncomfortable truths about him. Lots of missed opportunities for more complicated storytelling.

I have a piece on Once Upon a Time in Harlem coming soon and will say more later, but I cannot recommend the film enough. A beautiful snapshot of important history.

Musk is a staggering, immersive portrait of a sociopath. An extremely detailed and increasingly perturbing look at his modus operandi, told in many of his own words and with amazing access by the people who knew him well professionally and personally—some whom were at one point complicit.

I am somewhat mixed on La Bola Negra, mainly due to its unevenness, but it is such an affecting work of art. I admire a lot about it.

As I feared, the extra story Pamela Voorhees gets in Crystal Lake is tedious and superfluous in ways that often render the character more ridiculous than unhinged. The additional narrative doesn't serve the character but rather panders to audiences more interested in fan fiction than anything else.

One of the many things I appreciate about Fjord is that it compels the audience to sit with their own complex emotions about language, culture, the humanity of religion and religious families, and how that all influences a perception of childhood abuse. It's a thorny adult film.

The concept of Misty Green is quite intriguing. The execution isn't up to par, though. The direction and writing are shoddy. The movie is crammed with too many albeit interesting thoughts on forgiveness, unlikability, Hollywood corrosion, violence, and race with no actual point.

The new Carrie superbly brings the impact of bullying into brutal focus in the social media era. The problem with it, and many other series adaptations, is that too many liberties are made to fulfill 8 hrs of TV. For instance, one character is overwritten while another is disastrously underwritten.

Verity might have killed as a Saturday night Lifetime movie of the week in 1993. So much of it feels like a mindless couch thriller. Very little character development, plot sequences that go nowhere and add nothing, with a premise that alludes to something far more interesting than what it is.

I was skeptical at first, but the East of Eden series is quite good. The expansion of Lee's character from the film is especially thoughtful and wonderfully performed by Hoon Lee.

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is such a refreshing, earnest new film hinging on a conflict of faith and brutal survival that I mostly enjoyed watching very much. Mahershala Ali is, as always, wonderful as is Adia. Though, it struggles with some of its storytelling and supporting characters.

Netflix's new movie, Unabomber, has absolutely no point. And it's a total waste of Shailene Woodley and Jacob Tremblay's talent. Breathtakingly dull.

I completely fell for Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! An increasingly quirky, sensual portrayal of grief through the story of a woman's journey to regain her sense of sexuality, desire, and self-worth in the world of ballroom dance. I never knew what to expect next from it.

A reckoning of To Catch a Predator could be worthy, but neither Predators nor Primetime is it in part due to their lack of quality and nuance. Primetime, in particular, is a clunky reflection of the cult phenomenon, compounded by shallow storytelling, a caricature lead performance and garish score.

I really appreciate the swift, blunt humor of Youth. Sharon Horgan and Sharlene Whyte are so good together on this biting show about aging, sexuality, parenthood, relationships, and corporate climbing in an increasingly youth-centered world.

I still question the influx of white, rural, pull yourself up by the bootstraps fare lately, but I'm always curious to see an Ethan Hawke film. The Weight, co-starring Julia Jones and Russell Crowe, is a decent yet familiar offering set around a Great Depression-era prison camp.

Some of technical and storytelling choices in Black Zombie leave a lot to be desired. But I do think it helps boost an important conversation on the colonial Haitian origins of the zombie and how that image has often been bastardized through a white Hollywood lens. Worth a watch for that reason.

Now in season 2, I continue to be impressed with how The Paper expands on the ideas and ideals of The Office through a small-town newspaper relic and its workers. It has a lot of heart and it's also hilarious. Sabrina Impacciatore is especially good.
