I am so proud to announce the launch of this volume, Walking Together on Parallel Paths. Each chapter is written by a team that includes Indigenous and non-Indigenous authors, and explores how we can co-create ethical practices in higher education. ecampusontario.pressbooks.pub/walkingtoget...

Also, I would love to sit down and talk about this with you -- I'm collaborating on a paper right now about the notion of "excellence" and I Have Thoughts.

I don't think she characterizes it as "decolonizing", but a lot of KerryAnn O'Meara's work has looked at (in)equity in academic merit & reward assessments.

Speaking as a prof, I love it when even long-ago former students accost me with, “Dr Anderson? I’m [name] and I took [class] with you!”

I am on holiday in a province not my own. Out for a walk, I noticed houses with lawn art based on the provincial flag. I wondered whether it was fascism or just small-town quaintness. Then I noticed the sculptures of black boys with fishing rods.

In my 50s I’m relishing being mid at a lot of things instead of excellent at one. I’m a mid singer, a mid weightlifter, a mid embroiderer, a mid baker, *and* a mid birdwatcher!

It’s no less impressive to me but probably societally it’s not as recognizably praiseworthy, which is a different metric, obvs

This reminds me, as I head out to move twins into first-year dorms, to turn off their location-sharing. My 18yos might well be indifferent, but it’s symbolically important for me to make that break.

I’m not teaching Intro Linguistics this year but if I were, I would assign this review to my students to read:

Yeah I’d say Gen Z is functioning like a proper name in the same way as WBEZ

I’m a Canadian with ‘zed’ in almost every context but it’s ‘zee’ in Gen Z and the Chicago public radio station WBEZ.

Like, is Lettuce Love selling weed or salad? I genuinely don’t know.

Around here the leaf-related names are so common that I can’t tell the difference between weed stores and salad bowl restaurants.

My experience has been that every single request for a "chat" has come from a man who wants to tell me why I am wrong and he is right. So I offer a third suggestion: rather than a decade of resentment, rather than clearing the air, consider Letting It Go.

I can’t narrow it down to just one.
Four enamel pins. 1. Conversation hearts that read No Thanks. 2. Progress pride stripes in the shape of a wifi symbol. 3. A large lichen. 4. A tiny unicorn above a banner that reads “ed tech will not save you”

Catherine Anderson @candershamilton.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
On reflection I realize I have unintentionally assembled extensive collections of enamel pins and sassy t-shirts. Oh, and coloured pens.

Working on a conference proposal in a discipline that's new to me and not confident if wordplay in presentation titles is the done thing. I fear not, but am not sure I'm capable of writing a straightforward title?!?

On the one hand, I'm on research leave so I'm not experiencing my Annual August Panic. On the other hand, my twins start uni in two different cities in about 3 weeks, so the difference in ambient household panic level is negligible. August solidarity to all students and teachers!

According to my caller ID, Tommy Douglas phoned me last week, but he did not leave a voicemail. Perhaps not coincidentally, I still can't get the NDP to take me off their mailing list.

I also find the construct of *paag* to be a hopeful one, because, as the authors say, "it offers a promising target for social intervention". The hope that my work might eventually make a positive difference in the world helps me keep doing it.

Catherine Anderson @candershamilton.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
That disorientation can give rise to prejudice, but is not itself necessarily prejudice. This framing makes it easier for me to be generous with people who do harm out of cluelessness or clumsiness, while still refusing generosity to those motivated by hate.
110
Catherine Anderson @candershamilton.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I find it difficult to be generous towards people who do harm to the trans people I love. I'm often dismissive and impatient. The authors here characterize *paag* as distinct from both prejudice and ignorance. Rather, it is a disorientation resulting from collapse of previously stable social norms.

Catherine Anderson @candershamilton.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
But the new theoretical construct of *pervasive ambiguity about gender* appeals to me intuitively, and strikes me as a generous and hopeful framing of the present moment of Gender Trouble.

This paper is so useful for my work, and it is exciting to me for a couple reasons. First, a disclaimer: I am almost entirely ignorant about psychometrics/sociometrics, so I am offering zero commentary on the quantitative argument at the core of the paper. 1/n

I was promoted to full prof 21 years after starting my faculty career. I have found that consciously identifying as a Late Bloomer helps with some of the feelings of being behind.
