Reading the long list of ABCs failures on pedestrian/cycling safety really hurts. I'm really hoping for a OneCity majority in October to fix what's broken at Vancouver City Hall.
Mayor Sim and ABC have shown time after time that they’re not willing to challenge the status quo to achieve real reductions in deaths and injuries on our roads. Their abysmal record on traffic safety includes the following:

Voted against bike lanes on Broadway, which is causing headaches for the redevelopment of Vancouver General Hospital and its impact on the 10th Avenue cycling route

Disappeared an intersection safety cameras motion that would have given us an extra hundred safety cameras at Vancouver’s most dangerous intersections.

Disappeared my Halloween Safe Streets motion.

Abandoned Councillors’ Boyle and Bligh's truck sideguards motion.

Voted against reducing the speed limit on Cornwall Avenue in Kitsilano to 30 km/hr.

Reduce the Water Street pedestrian plaza to Sundays only - it’s not even operating during FIFA due to budget cuts.

The Vancouver Villages draft plan looks good - or at least the part for my neighborhood does. I'm excited about the new traffic light at Stainsbury and Victoria, an official Greenway, longer high street, and a Node for Public Life (sounds mysterious). www.shapeyourcity.ca/villages

On Discord, Shawn Vulliez, COPE's campaign director made it clear that the "People's Primary" that COPE kept referring to was never actually a primary at all. It was a "vibes" check that would pressure mayoral candidates to step down if there was a general feeling that they weren't doing well. 🤦
Message from Shaw V:
"There's only one game in town, which is social pressure. Every version of this primary idea ends up at the same place: pressure to withdraw for the greater good, and an offramp that makes it appealing (ie run for council instead) - with time to get off the ballot

For decision on limiting, we don't really need one. We just need to keep the total amount of candidates around 12-15. Then we run a campaign, and we elect a progressive majority. Like the by-election except with more seats. Over-cooking the ballot down to 10 just means the parties are unecessarily accountable to eachothers reputations. We don't need to mutually endorse.

And yes, polling is limited but is broadly instructive. If there was sufficient trust between parties, we could also use other metrics. But honestly I think that unironically "vibes" is a useful measure. For example, when I walk down the street with Sean or Pete, people tell them to run for Mayor. It's palpable. Is it the basis of an objective and data based withdrawal? Not really... But is it a meaningful point of data that campaigns could consider when making the decision to step back or not? Absolutely."

The WeatherCan app gives me air quality notifications and it's been horrible in Winnipeg all summer. My family says it's like hanging out at a bonfire. If they spend too much time outdoors their throats are scratchy. This is awful (and entirely predictable given the world's fossil fuel addiction).

Staples are definitely the gold standard for most buildings because they support a range of bike types (like cargo bikes). But I don't mind coat-hangers for kids bikes. This is what some of the existing racks look like. It would take a lot of staples to handle those.

At our school, we started with a 4-week pilot in 2023. In 2024, we expanded it to 6-weeks. This year, we ran it all-year (Sep-Jun) on Fridays and everyday (M-F) in May. It's taken a ton of volunteer effort, but we've slowly proven to the community that this is transformational, even in the winter.

A lot of the kids that go to our school walk or bike, but enough are driven in cars that it turns the streets into dangerous gauntlets that have to be navigated carefully. There are often close calls between kids and vehicles.
