In a similar vein, Pierre Trudeau said "the state has no place in the bedrooms for the nation" while introducing decriminalization legislation before (but in the same year as) Stonewall. It passed shortly after. See also Wolfenden report of 1957.

Take my comment about SAT1500+ to be a short form for whatever complex criteria you think they have. Do we know that the last man is is equal or worse than the last woman in?

Can we tell if it's deliberate sorting, or that's just how the 1500+ SAT score applicant (or whatever line they have) works out. ? Also, is the gap driven entirely by one school (such as engineering?)

And everyone who was beefing about casting Lupita Nyong'o and Elliot Page in the Odyssey just got slapped in the face by the Nobel committee, and they're defenseless because their handlers haven't told them what they think about Geryon yet

Everyone who was beefing about casting Lupita Nyong'o and Elliot Page in the Odyssey just got slapped in the face by the Nobel committee. They're defenseless because they're now being asked questions about the relationship between Geryon and Heracles and of course nobody has the slightest idea.

Inder Irish law, they can't send more than 12 people overseas without approval from 1) cabinet, 2) the Dáil, and 3) the UN Security Council. So Russia (and the other SC perm members) would have a veto over Irish particpation.

Probably not, because the same dynamics occur in countries that don't do that

"loses bodycams overboard regularly" is inherently suspicious. I'm still for making corruption harder, even if imperfectly. And either way, isn't inherently worse for/maritime ecology, at worst it's wasteful spending, not an environmental problem.

Body cams prevent fraud, and stuff like fishing boats with illegal catches paying bribes to have CG not notice. I'm generally in favor of enforcement officials wearing bodycams.

Buoys and lighthouses that prevent shipwrecks prevent oil spills. "Maritime Infrastructure" and conservation/ecological protection aren't an either/or binary.

There's an academic version of this; students run a draft through Turnitin or another plagiarism detector, it clears, they edit it, and they hand it in and then their TA runs it through Turnitin and finds out it's very similar to the second-last draft.

This feels more like Oppositional Defiant Disorder than a political position, especially the not-liking elbows-up nationalism. That's just being mad you don't have anything to complain about.

That funding model isn't really an ordinary business plan; it's a method for turning money into prestige. Some rich people have always wanted that deal, and I suspect they always will.

The fight over Canada isn't about trade. It's about whether a sovereign country can diversify its way out of dependence — and what happens to American power if it does.

Reminds me of the Madrid-Munich-Milan fans who thought European football could never survive a good team in Paris. (PSG was also suspect on the FFP stuff, of course, but it was being framed as geo-structural)

hmm I have a followup question; is it less dignified and therefore less "royal" that he's not "resting in peace" ? And whoever commissioned this wanted that? Or this is just early-ish for gisant effigies and the conventions haven't been worked out yet?

CanadianTom @canadiantom.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
New to me but two guesses; 1) sculptor was showing off; this is much more dynamic than usual for an gisant effigy. 2) it's some reference to the short-boots/curt-hose nicknames. Low-cut shoe (with spurs) but long socks?

Yeah the IMDB list is much more global and better for it. Heated Rivalry ranked in the 70s, but in a tier with Mad Men, Ted Lasso, and Downton Abbey. Interesting that neither Schitt's Creek or Hacks seems to be getting named on many ballots.

Overindexed? sure. Can use sophisticated polisci vocab to explain the conflict? Mostly not. Are Canadians intuiting that PMMC's approach is both correct and necessary? I think so. I know no one in Chicoutimi, but I saw the recent election results there

5c. CPC is also losing their traditional rep on military & defense, and on nationalism vs separatism. If they lose all the pillars of business, military, and nation, all they've got left is the racist dingbats, and they will find themselves with the SoCreds & the Whigs in the attic of history.
000
CanadianTom @canadiantom.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
5b. Harper also realizes the threat to the CPC from another angle. They trade on their rep as the party of business, and PMMC is eating their lunch on that. Harper needed to show he made the guest list at least.
100
CanadianTom @canadiantom.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
5a. Harper was there undermining Poilievre because he intuits the consequences of this contest is potentially devastating for the CPC. They've depended for a long time on "we have to" and optionality is a huge threat to that.
100
CanadianTom @canadiantom.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
4. Poilievre was wrong about judging this by it's immediate results of factory building. The immediate result was network building and proving that Canada has options, and that's a big win. Poilievre can lose twice on this bet, when the ports and refineries and factories actually open.

CanadianTom @canadiantom.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
3. Melanie Joly was wrong to say that this is fixing Canada's capital shortage. Between the banks and the pensions funds, there's lots of investable capital. But having allies and networks is worth it on its own terms.

CanadianTom @canadiantom.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
2. I agree with Avi Lewis that selling of revenue streams from airports is bad business. MAYBE worth it if it's a dealmaker for the network-building project, but it's not that great a thing to do.
