This paper, which is finally out in @Finance and Society, is the outcome of many many discussions in Cologne, Florence, Montreal, Bremen, Pavia, Napoli and more. Working with my friend Gabriele Beretta has been a pleasure and we hope it will spark interesting discussions (it's also open access)!

We also underline how this push for investment (desperately needed, don't get us wrong) is often framed in ways that delegitimise space for other forms of public spending, abusing the limits of the technical distinction and disregarding the demand effects that "consumption" spending has.

We focus on the technical construction of an important distinction, i.e. the one between consumption spending and investment spending, and we highlight how the distinction between the two is much more constructed and politically driven than a simple technical typology.

!! NEW PAPER !! In this new paper, we shed critical light on the way in which the turn towards more space for public investment has been celebrated as a solution for the shortcomings on the EU fiscal rules.

Germany, EU fiscal rules and the illusion of objectivity
German defence spending risks breaking EU fiscal rules. But while the rules are presented as a technical calculation, they are less objective than it appears.

The book underlines the intertwining between structural power and international dependencies and the aiding role of free trade reforms in favoring this world order in the 19th century (with interesting parallels with today). An important read!

The book is a powerful reconstruction of the role that liberal reform played in creating and sustaining the power of a dominating hegemonic class sitting at the core of the capitalist system.

A few months ago, I had the chance to read and review the new book from Giampaolo Conte titled "A History of Capital Transformation: a Critique of Liberal Capitalist Reforms" edited by Routledge Taylor & Francis Group. In the new issue of Capital and Class, you can find my review.

However, the current government is trying to shutdown this awareness in a very clumsy, yet dangerous way. In the last months, the government has been actively restricting spaces for dissent (not only in this field) and discrediting the voices asking for change and reflection on machismo in Italy.
