We stumbled across an exciting and unexpected piece at the National Museum of Asian Art: a relief from ancient Gandhara depicting the Buddha’s guardian Vajrapani as Herakles! He’s the figure hovering above the Buddha’s left shoulder, wearing a beard and holding a club / vajra in his left hand.

Above the charming Greek town of Nafplio loom the bastions of the Palamidi fortress. A tangible reminder of some of the empires that sought to dominate Greece, the fortress owes its existence to the Morean campaigns of Francesco Morosini (future Doge of Venice) in the late 17th century.
