‘Besides the many old houses that are haunted, there are several endowed with the simple credit of having been the scenes of murders and suicides. Some contain rooms which had particular names commemorative of such events ...' Robert Chambers, Traditions of Edinburgh, 1824.

In #JapaneseFolklore uwabami is an enormous snake #yokai with shapeshifting powers believed to eat and drink absolutely vast amounts. It has a particular fondness for drinking sake and one of its favourite foods is people. Legend says it can even swallow... #dontgointothewoods #SwampSunday 1/3

It's the winter solstice! The Sun is on its shortest path through the sky and we'll see the least daylight of the year. Stonehenge was built to align with the sun on the solstices and on the winter solstice, the sun sets to the south-west of the stone circle.

In a blessing copied in an eighth century manuscript, we can see boundaries between prayer and magic blur, showing us that these categories didn't exist in opposition in the Early Middle Ages, and are more often than not indistinguishable (today Vienna, ÖNB, Cod. lat.563). 1/
A Blessing for salt in a eighth century uncial script with no word seperation and some strange spellings on a rather scrappy folio of parchment. A page of a manuscript in uncial script with Merovingian style decoration.
