Wargaming is such a strange experience - emotionally engaging, fun and sort of terrifying all at the same time. Earlier this week, I introduced a tactical game to a group of scholars working across the humanities. Very rewarding work!

Had a very wargames-y Sunday, heading to the "Joy of Six" show at Sheffield Hallam university. I couldn't resist asking the Cold War Gone Hot gamers about their views on battlefield nuclear weapons...

Xi may have canned the PLA Strategic Support Force, but they lived on in our game of Littoral Commander (set c. 2040) last night. 中国人民解放军战略支援部队万岁???

An unhappy topic - total disagreement how to tackle nuke issues amid growing arsenals and "emerging" tech. However, a happy moment to finally hold hard copies of the last project's book - co-written with friends. Please DON'T BUY OUR BOOK. Read it free here: www.taylorfrancis.com/books/978103...

Somehow accidentally timed it perfectly so that "Here Comes the Sun King" started playing as my train pulled into Paris. Not sure this was the meaning Lennon and McCartney intended

LLMs aren't inevitably improving? Who could have predicted this?! existentialcomics.com/comic/205
David Hume in cartoon form from existential comics. He says: "You know though, you say you are on a hot streak, but did you know that according to my ground breaking philosophy there is actually no way to predict your future results from looking at the past?"

You may think you are fancy with your "two-peer deterrence challenge" but meanwhile I'm on another level wondering if the US isn't using enough classic hip hop to support STRATCOM.

Officially starting Ritual Deterrence fieldwork in Taiwan! Starting with the guard ceremony at Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. Maybe not deterrence-coded, but useful for comparison with other military practices nonetheless.
Troops perform a ceremonial drill in front of the Chiang Kai-Shek memorial hall in Taipei. Four of the soldiers are presenting rifles, with two more observing behind. A crowd watches. In the background is the huge memorial hall itself.

A black swan event occurred as two co-authors convened... at the Black Swan Inn. Celebrating a little over a year since me and @bleddb.bsky.social ruffled some feathers with our critique of AI battlefield advisors. Thanks to everyone that engaged w/ us since, it's been v. rewarding!

Played the game "The Grizzled" the other day but didn't realise it would personally attack me
Three cards from "The Grizzled": a player's character and two traits collected during play, in this case both "absent-minded" and "clumsy"

It was a privilege to have Aurelius Jiang visit us in the department to provide us with a Taiwanese tea ceremony. He totally spoiled us with unbelievably delicious tea. Many many thanks to Aurelius and Lily for organising!
The brightly coloured and crisply designed "Formosa Tea Brewing Guide" produced by Aurelius Jiang and Kris Wu. The organisation name is in Chinese characters "不知茶" or "Don't know about tea".Aurelius Jiang of the 不知茶 organisation teaches a Copenhagen University researcher how to pour tea correctly from a covered bowl. The table is set with various accessories required for the Taiwanese tea ceremony.A group of Copenhgaen University researchers pose with Aurelius Jiang of "不知茶"

When your friend accuses you of being a "Hume boy" I suppose you should accept your new identity
An existential comics cartoon of David Hume at the fun fair, eating candy floss while dressed in his 18th century attire. The caption states "Live each day like there is no truly rational reason to believe there will be another"

Did nukes mean major war was "off the table"? No, we have archival evidence of war plans. This 1970 plan developed from an original invasion concept from the 1950s. Rather than being "unthinkable" this kind of data shows some elites were very much still thinking about the specifics of nuclear use
A colourful military map from the 1970s showing the North Coast of Western Europe. The map is covered in arrows planning movements of troops on an offensive into France from Poland. Hand drawn mushroom clouds are placed where the Warsaw Pact would attack with nuclear weapons.
