This scanner also scans Super 8 frames, which is honestly kind of useful, considering how small and otherwise hard-to-see the images are on a strip. Capture quality is barely passable, unfortunately.

Again, similar stuff going on here. You can tell what's in the picture, but it's hardly an accurate representation of what's on the film: detail is poor, colours are blocky, and anything beyond midtones is RIP.

Here's the same slide scanned with a Nikon Coolscan and the Magnasonic above. Hard to get a sense for the Nikon's much higher resolution here, but the shadow and colour detail on the Magnasonic is abysmal.

People will often ask us about those "slide scanners" they sell on Amazon (like this Magnasonic.) They're an appealing proposition: totally self-contained, one-button operation, JPEGs save to an SD card. Unfortunately, they're a complete waste of time. Samples in thread👇

Shout out to one of the most engineer-brained camera origin stories of all time.

Ren Ng, Lytro original CEO and
founder, holding a Lytro camera.

While he was a researcher at Stanford, Ren Ng was photographing a friend's daughter and noticed, "it was incredibly difficult to focus the image properly and capture her fleeting smile in just the right way." After completing his Ph.D, Ng decided to use his experience in light field research to "start a company that would produce light-field cameras that everyone could enjoy." The company was originally named Refocus Imaging, before launching as Lytro.
