Extreme close up of a damp grey squirrel standing on an iron gate. A green garden is in the background with a single tree in it, where the squirrel lives.

No, it stopped after Rentokil seemingly wiped out all the nature in the area. Kestrels, Squirrels, Magpies, Jays and more all vanished. But just 6 short months later they’re bouncing back, including the Jays who I especially love.

After months of fearing that pest control may win and permanently wipe out the squirrels around me I’ve had a visitor! So all the money spent on trying to wipe them out has been wasted it appears. Nature 1 Evil Neighbour 0 Welcome back lil friend, let me get you all the nuts. #mammals
An Eastern Grey Squirrel stands on a fence leaning in towards the camera. It’s an extreme close up and the squirrel fills the frame.
A winter garden is in the background with green grass and a tree with no leaves.

Do you mean the Dove in Hammersmith? I’m not a beer connoisseur, but I do like it- I was working in Pennsylvania last year and they’re crazy about sours and fruity beers, micro breweries all over the place, so it felt rude not to try them. All of them. Craft beer was better there than here imo.

I had some health news today that I was told to prepare for the worst about but turned out fine, so in your face Dr. I’m celebrating alone with an over-priced fruity beer that I actually really recommend as it’s delicious, if a bit odd. Tastes proper custardy. #custard

I was griping to my best friend about Joe Rogan and expressing my bewilderment at his money and ‘popularity’, and at the end of my 5 minute rant she turned to me and said “who is Joe Rogan?”. And I was reminded she has no social media at all and is the happiest person I know. And smartest.

If you’re near squirrels you’ve almost certainly heard them, and maybe assumed it was very loud birds. I find their shouting to be hilarious. They do it to warn about predators, scare off other squirrels, attract other squirrels etc. I’ll dig out some footage of my squirrel shooting at me.

Yeah I’m in Ealing. 100% - I saw the van outside my house and asked them. But you’re right, soon they’ll be babies & then they’ll spread out from their dreys and come back to my garden anyway. Absolutely needless. Never met my new neighbour but I think we can safely say we’re not going to be pals.

Callame @callame.bsky.social · 29/01/2024
I’m so confused about it. What miserable people they must be. The thing is it’s pretty pointless as in a month or two they’ll be back anyway after spreading from further afield. They were also occasional prey for a family of kestrel’s & a peregrine falcon family. So they’ll leave as well now. 🙁👎

If you’re wondering where the squirrel pics are I’m very sad to say that my new neighbours “didn’t like the noise they make” so hired Rentokill. Unfortunately it looks like they’ve managed to kill them all from my garden and nearby as I haven’t see one for weeks. No exaggeration to say I’m bereft.

A female grey squirrel stood on a fence, its rear paws with front paws clenched in front of it. Staring straight to camera. A garden with green grass is behind and a tree stands in the garden. The squirrel lives in the tree.

I wish! No he lives in the garden in the tree you can see in the background of most pics. I can feed him by hand and he’ll sit on my foot sometimes, but I tend to ‘scare’ him away so he keeps a healthy distance from humans.

Hope everyone is having a peaceful few days. To those that aren’t; keep going, tunnels end more often than not I’ve learned. And for those same people that this time of year is a challenge, here’s Kentucky desperately trying - and eventually succeeding - at carrying off 3 big nuts. #mammals
Close up of a grey squirrel trying to get 3 monkey nuts in its mouth. There’s a sunny green garden in the background.

Another shot from a few weeks ago with the brown leaves falling from Kentucky’s tree in the background. I appreciate I’m a bit of a one trick pony with my squirrel shots but when they pose like this I can’t resist. Love them looking healthy like in this image. Look at that groomed tail! #mammals
Grey squirrel stood side on, on a railing, looking direct in to camera. His left paw is slightly raised. His tail is healthy and bushy hanging off the rail. A tree is in the background with brown autumn leaves starting to fall. The tree is where the squirrel lives.

The leaves have gone from Kentucky’s tree now so I get a good view of his drey. It was a bird box, but it’s his home now. Love his tail-styling in this shot. #mammals
Damp grey squirrel sitting on a railing, facing the camera. He’s holding a nut in his front paws. A wintery garden is behind him 25 feet away and though the trees are bare for winter the garden grass is bright green.

Having a bad week, made a bit better by squirrel visits. Squirrels are reciprocal animals, & I get brought twigs as thanks for being a free nut dispenser. Today almost improved when I was brought a KFC bone, but when I went to get my phone for a pic a magpie stole it. Thanks Magpie. #mammals

Got sunday night fear of the week ahead, so here's a bonus squirrel shot taken from inside my flat this past summer, which feels a long time ago... #sqrlpix
Squirrel sat on the other side of window blinds on a rail with the sun projecting only it's shadow onto the blinds. The top of a green plant is just visible at the bottom of the shot.

I love Jays. There's 2 that should be arriving back here anytime for the winter to resume their yearly battles with the Magpies and Squirrels. Hopefully I'll get some nice close ups, they're very bold.

It's that time again! Our relationship is transactional - Kentucky only gets breakfast if he gives me a good pose & lets me snap him. He outdid himself here. Did you know, research suggests that in the right environment, a single squirrel can plant 10,000 trees in it's lifetime. #mammals

Another day, another pic of Kentucky & today's fact is that a test by Yale into squirrel memory showed one squirrel able to locate - with pinpoint accuracy - 900 of 1000 buried nuts over a 2 year period. Best guess is he used landmarks as a guide. 2nd fact: his memory is better than mine. #mammals
A grey squirrel on a rail. Standing on his rear paws with front paws clenched in front. His nose is raised high pointing to the top right of shot.
It's autumn and the day is grey.
You can see the tree the squirrel lives in to the right of the image. The grass the tree stands in is green and lush.

It's wet & windy in London, but Kentucky still wants his breakfast. Squirrel fact; squirrels will engage in deceptive behaviour if they think someone is watching them & will 'fake bury' nuts, throwing leaves in the air for dramatic effect;I love this behaviour! source: shorturl.at/fjOZ7 #mammals
Damp grey squirrel sits on a fence in close up. You can see the full squirrel but not much of his tail. He's on his rear paws with front paws clenched in front at his chest. It's a grey autumn day and an out of focus garden is in the background. You can just see some branches of the tree where the squirrel lives on the right of the image, and the green of the grass garden.
