Following on from the previous #SirenSaturday we have another building with no obvious remains of a Siren. "Portobello Indoor Baths, Melville Street, Portobello" This was given Carrier planning number 254/107 in the early 1960's.

Well that is sad 😢 Picture This Scotland is not to blame the account is only reposting a picture from a source which should be authoritative but has got it wrong, it is not Picture This Scotland's Mistake. If the reaction to a correction is to block then why bother in the first place ?

#SirenSaturday I had resisted posting buildings where I found no obvious remains of a Siren. Breaking that rule today with a factory hooter. "T. & H. Smith Ltd, Blandfield Chemical Works, Wheatfield Road, Edinburgh" This was given Carrier planning number 254/47 in the early 1960's.

No Vibe coding, just bad coding but we are slowly getting there and I have enjoyed the tiny amounts of time I have been able to spend on this project. It needs to actually resize to screens, especially mobile, before I let people get their hands on it directly. #SirenSaturday #EdinburghPoliceBox

Controversial statement; Vandalise your books! My Late Grandad was a Relief Clerk for British Railways around Edinburgh in the 1950's. I had taken on some of his books and in an appendix of this one he had marked every passenger station he worked with a tick and each Goods station with a G.
Cover of book: Rail centres: Edinburgh by A.J. MullayAppendix 1, this page has the first half of a list of stations in Edinburgh.

Stations marked with a tick are:
Abbeyhill, Balgreen Halt, Colinton, Corstorphine, Craigleith, Dalry Road, Gorgie East, Haymarket, Joppa & Leith North

Goods stations marked with a G: Bonnington Road, Currie, Gorgie East & Granton.Appendix 1, this page has the second half of a list of stations in Edinburgh.

I knew I had a copy of the top down view and it was in a presentation. This is proposed, you can make out the Two quarries (and Tramway in the Worked one). As well as the water proofing, If anything is built on the hillside than loadings on that lump of concrete will need to be factored in.
Extract form a Diagram entitled:
"SITE MHA
SITE PLAN FOR STRUCTURE R4
Scale:- 1/500"

"Drawing No 3/23E
MOTT. HAY & ANDERSON."

It shows the current layout of the two quarries with the proposed R4 overlaid. Me giving a talk in Barnton Quarry at the 2018 Doors Open Day, with the Diagram in the other picture on screen.

David Booth @caleydave.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
Bingo, here is a better view of the steep hillside (it's worse than it looks). This was 2014 and the same day as the picture of the fire at the emergency exit. The emergency exit and air intake is left beside the fire, the cooler exhaust stack is right.
The picture is off the hillside covering the R4 at Barnton Quarry and is from 2014.
The emergency exit and air intake is left beside the fire. The fence to the left is the boundary with the council quarry. The cooler exhaust stack is right. Between these two stacks sits the plant room annex where the 'dirty' (radioactive or gas filled air) air handling equipment is located.

David Booth @caleydave.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
Here is the view of the hill following tree clearance. There was a lot of ash dieback which had not been dealt with due to being on private land. I would hope despite looking drastic it would have helped the nature reserve. Where I was standing is what has been dug up. That is the air exhaust.

The Barnton Quarry Restoration Project undertook work to remove the self seeded and non native trees. This was prioritised due to fears that the tree roots, due to their age, would damage the tanking. That knowledge was lost when the Restoration project was shuttered but also enabled this digging.
A fire burning brush and tree limbs between the Council fence and the Emergency Exit/Air intake at the rear of the building.

David Booth @caleydave.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
Now here is the issue, the new hill rises slightly between the cliff face & the air exhaust after which there is a steep hill down towards the cooler exhaust before an extreme, unwalkable, gradient down towards the emergency exit which is as close to the boundary fence as practical.
Cross section drawn by me on a whiteboard showing the Quarries, hills and R4.

David Booth @caleydave.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
Instead Barnton Quarry (North) was leased from the Edinburgh Corporation, ending working at the Quarry, and the New R4 was built on the deeper Quarry floor. The only digging done was the circular tunnel section between the Quarries to link old and new buildings. The R4 was then covered with Shale.

In the 1950's it was decided a new underground Sector Operations Centre would be built to a standard design known as an "R4". The existing Quarry was considered but the hard Dolerite prevented digging and the backfill and landscaping would be massive to cover the 3 story Concrete block.
Part of a cross section of the R4 building.
It is 3 stories with a rear plant annex and entrance tunnel either side.

In WW2 Mount Quarry was leased by the RAF for the Fighter command 'Turnhouse' Sector Operations Room. By war-end it was the "Midlothian" but in reality covered Southern Scotland. Following a brief closure when the Air Defence over Scotland was withdrawn it would be reactivated for the Cold War.

The name Barnton comes from the ownership by said estate and not the location. There are two Dolerite Quarries back to back. The Original Barnton Quarry, later renamed South then Mount, was worked until 1914. The Northern Quarry started later and was worked until 1951.

The 1975 Edition of the "BBC WAR BOOK" suggests that Long Wave was not part of the War Time Broadcasting System (WTBS). Instead it was to be shut down and kept in readiness for possible special use.
Extract from the BBC 1975 "War Book":

Droitwich Long-wave Transmitter.
17. The need for civil defence regional broadcasting has reduced the value of the Droitwich Long-wave transmitter, as this cannot be regionalised. It is obviously important that nothing should be radiated which would divert the attention of the public from listening to their own regional transmissions on their own wavelength. The Long-wave transmitter will, therefore, close down when the WTBS starts, but will remain available for subsequent use if required. During the preceding hour, however, it will broadcast a special programme describing the WTBS, and informing listeners in the different Civil Defence Regions of the frequencies on which these regional broadcasts may be received.
