Greatures: Level One by KC Green Green is clearly enjoying himself with these little weirdos, and I had a great time too. They're a bunch of shitty little guys in a shitty little world, but they're doing their best, and there's something beautiful in knowing that someone the shnail is dancing. 💙📚

The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones Perfect start to spooky season. I grew up next to a reservation so it was illuminating to read a horror novel from that perspective. You learn a lot about somebody when you learn what they're afraid of. 💙📚

The Faith of Beasts by James S. A. Corey A perfectly cromulent novel. Very much the second book in the trilogy, but there were still some interesting reveals and character development. I love the setting, but the execution doesn't match the ambition of what it's setting up. Alien slug guy ruled. 💙📚

Always Never by Jordi Lafebre Perfect. Precious. Timeless. If you've got a heart in your body, you owe it to yourself to give this a read. It's such a simple twist on a love story, but it's executed so so well. 💙📚

2666 by Roberto Bolaño This novel kicked my ass. Life is so huge and wonderful and terrifying and banal and we're all just stumbling through it together and Bolaño took all of that chaos and coincidence and condensed it down as much as he could, but it's still bursting at the seams. Give it a try💙📚

I Roved Out In Search of Truth & Love: Tome 2 by Alexis Flower Flower follows the fun in this one. Our heroines meander along their quest while their pasts and the wider world are revealed along the way. Some truly jaw-dropping spreads here. 💙📚

The Sea by Rikke Villadsen This fisherman feels like he was plucked from Over the Garden Wall and dropped into The Lighthouse. Villadsen's smeared pencils dreamily convey the sense of bewilderment and imbue everything with atmospheric dread, but there's hope lurking underneath. 💙📚

Kingdoms of Death by Christopher Ruocchio When reading retrospective first-person, it can be difficult for the author to maintain tension since we already know how the story ends. Ruocchio played me like a goddamn yo-yo with this one. Put me to sleep and then walked the dog on me. 💙📚

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman I liked this more than I thought I would. Had some genuine laugh-out-loud moments; had some shake-my-head-and-sigh moments. There's a really compelling story in here, but sometimes the cloud of Axe Body Spray is too thick to see it. 💙📚

I Roved Out In Search of Truth & Love by Alexis Flower Crocodile Dundee after reading Fourth Wing: That's not smut; this is smut! I think we could all stand to get a little hornier these days. Blockbusters hardly even make you bust. Remember True Lies? Why don't they make em like that anymore? 💙📚

Bug Wars: Book One - Lost in the Yard by Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, Matthew Wilson, and Becca Carey Unrepentant, gratuitous, gleeful, anything but subtle, this is one heck of an opening chapter. I want fifty more books of this. I want to play a campaign in this world. I can't wait till August. 💙📚

A Hero Born by Jin Yong Translated literature is uniquely powerful because, while all literature opens a window into a world not your own, translated books warp that window and expose a truth that's foundational to all worlds and worldviews: Everybody loves it when a bad dude gets his ass kicked 💙📚

The Three Fat Men by Yuri Olesha Fun little fairytale! Definitely of its time, but the core message still rings true, and Olesha has some great Adamsesque turns of phrase. A bruise is described as an unattractive rose blossom or a very attractive frog, and the narrator is exquisite. 💙📚

One Piece Vols 37, 38, 39 by Eiichiro Oda You should really give One Piece a shot. I know it's long, but if you read just five minutes a day, you'll have a fun hobby for the rest of your life. Franky says Trans Rights. 💙📚

Daughter of Crows by Mark Lawrence This left me wanting more. An academy turning girls into incarnations of the Furies is a hell of a pitch, but ended up as the Book of the Ancestor with a far less developed world. Read like we had to get this out of the way before the story starts. 💙📚

Mina's Matchbox by Yoko Ogawa A tilt-shift slice-of-life. Ogawa beautifully captures those idiosyncratic moments of childhood that only see odd in retrospect, but followed perfectly with a child's logic and acceptance of the world. My grandma had a monkey, didn't everyone's? 💙📚

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir I absolutely loved this movie, and I heard the book dove a little deeper into the science, so I picked this up. The science is the best part. Ryan Gosling lends Grace an affable nature, but he sucks in this book. I would still die for Rocky, though. 💙📚

Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco The Plan was always for me to have read this book. Shockingly relevant in the face of GenAI and the splintering of our democracy. It's also really funny and reads like The DaVinci Code for adults. I loved TDC as a kid, but Renowned Author Dan Brown slays me. 💙📚

Mr. Styke by Brian McClellan I love Mad Ben Styke so much he wormed into my subconscious, and I played him in an improvised dungeons and dragons comedy show without realizing it. I seriously considered buying and wearing a replica of his ring. Everyone, read Powder Mage and play the TTRPG w/ me 💙📚

The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu Really solid. A fable blown up to epic scale, I'm reminded of Kipling's Just So Stories de-colonialised or Sanderson's Rhythm of War made compelling, or Dickinson's The Flight of Dragons with an actual plot. This would be a great entry point into the fantasy genre. 💙📚

Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian O'Brian is a master at communicating only what needs to be understood. The violence in this is so understated and the few deaths of note stand in stark relief. Aubrey and Maturin are a perfect pair of goobers and it's so fun watching them flail. 💙📚

Kraken by China Miéville When I was a highschool wrestler, my dad called me The Kraken. I used to wear an octopus ring. I am definitely biased, but this is a super fun read. A giant squid specimen goes missing from London's Natural History museum and kicks off the end of the world. Weird & grimy 💙📚

We Were Eight Years in Power by Ta-Nehisi Coates I voted for Obama both times, but I didn't really become politically conscious until his second term, and my views have changed considerably since, so reading something I so agree with now written during that era makes me wish I'd started earlier. 💙📚

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V. E. Schwab Picked this up blind from an airport bookstore because I loved Addie LaRue. I wasn't expecting sexy lesbian vampires dealing with the cyclical nature of generational trauma, and the pace drags at the end, but, all in all, a very fun read. 💙📚

Demon in White by Christopher Ruocchio This series has the best Dune books since God-Emperor. Ruocchio plopped himself down at the all you can eat Spec-Fic sushi conveyer belt and helped himself to the best parts of so many works but it's a synthesis rather than a derivation. 💙📚

By Blood, By Salt by J.L. Odom This was so close to being great. The prose, the characters, and the world all show ambition and skill, but they don't pop off the page. The whole novel has this barely simmering tension throughout, but there's no release or catharsis. Curious how book two fares. 💙📚

Tom's Crossing by Mark Z. Danielewski I loved this. It's a Western Moby Dick, it's the Iliad in Utah, it's The Great Panda Adventure but with horses instead of pandas. It's beyond epic, and the tension builds at a glacial pace, but when everything finally breaks loose, you feel born again. 💙📚

Scale your Everest by Erik Z. Severinghaus New job, so I figured now was as good as time as any to read the co-ceo's book. For a book about a man climbing Mount Everest, it is a shockingly humble and mindful work. In an effort to combat bias, I do have to call out the unhinged footnotes. 💙📚

Twelve Months by Jim Butcher We're so back. Peace Talks and Battle Ground were pretty choppy, but Butcher's righted the ship. Crazy lore reveals, crazy reunions, I laughed out loud, I cried, I don't know what else I could've asked for. Read this series; Start at Dead Beat, then try Storm Front. 💙📚

Let Me in Your Window by Adam Ellis Ellis does such a good job introducing premise, developing tension, and playing with modern technology in the form. I want to see him unleashed on a longer format and answer, "If this is true, what else is true? And, if that is true, what ELSE is true?" 💙📚

Bad Dreams in the Night by Adam Ellis Scary, but superficial. I don't know if it's his art style, but this felt a little tongue in cheek throughout. I really liked the commentary after each story, and the stories are all clearly very personal, but I wish that came through more in the telling. 💙📚

The Order of the Stick: On the Origin of PCs by Rich Burlew I can't believe I've been reading this series for twenty years, and it can still make me laugh out loud. If you want to understand what makes me tick, I think you could do a lot worse than reading this and watching The Venture Bros. 💙📚

You Like it Darker by Stephen King Like any collection of short stories, there's some bangers and some duds, but the back half of this is absolutely stacked. Rattlesnakes is a phenomenal sequel to Cujo, The Dreamers is a great nod to Lovecraft, and Laurie is King at his best. 💙📚

Billy Budd, Sailor by Herman Melville It would not be too far a stretch of the truth to say that, in this writer's view, Melville's prose (while often parenthetical and meandering) nevertheless brings joy not unlike that found upon grasping some ineffable truth once thought hidden by the Creator 💙📚

King Sorrow by Joe Hill Starting the year off with an absolute ripper. Joe Hill wrote a love letter to his dad chock full of gold coins for Constant Readers to find. I love the way he plays with form: short chapters, changing fonts, looping narratives. It's 900 pages but I never wanted it to end 💙📚

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk Nice little read. I didn't fully resonate with the main character, but I enjoyed the imagery and some of the philosophical musing. There's a passage about the heavenly sphere's influence on the soul that'll stick with me. 💙📚

Battle Ground by Jim Butcher This book rules. It's super clunky, but it's got the juice. I feel like I've been reading Butcher my whole life and these books are so special to me. They're cheesy, they're dated, but they've got heart where it counts. Strange to get so much rain in December 💙📚

Peace Talks by Jim Butcher Reread in preparation for Twelve Months next year. Enjoyed it much more the second time around, but it's still a really flawed book. It's padded. It's too short. Characters make huge choices that only make sense if you've read all the short stories. Still Dresden tho 💙📚

One Piece: Skypiea Vols. 31, 32, 33 by Eiichiro Oda Got literal chills at least three times while reading this. That scene at the end of the arc that sounds like a Beatles song? Perfection. And, the Davy Back game might be the funniest yet. "I'll do it!! I'm the Ball-Man!! This ball suits me!!" 💙📚

The Daughters' War by Christopher Buehlman Buehlman delivers on the promised goblins, betrayal, and revenge, but I didn't expect such a touching and introspective piece. Constraining the scope to a single character is such a smart way to do a prequel, and getting more Galva was such a delight. 💙📚
