Maricarmen presente! Audre Lorde’s late poems often invoke the 1984 killing of Eleanor Bumpurs, a disabled 66-year-old Black woman, shotgunned to death in her Bronx apartment by NYPD eviction marshals.

That "therefore" in the second image here working serious overtime. Yikes. Everyone knows the number of deaths will be the headline coming from this report, yet there's no attempt to generate a value based on any empirical evidence. That bums me out.
Given lack of specific data, one of the best available methods for generating a rough
estimate for any particular war is to use a ratio. According to a pivotal study by the Geneva
Declaration Secretariat in 2008, the burden of indirect deaths for the majority of conflicts
since the early 1990s has been between three to 15 times the number of direct deaths.
These experts suggested that a reasonable, conservative average estimate for any
contemporary conflict is a ratio of four indirect deaths for every one direct death.37
Since that study, advances in the field are making it increasingly clear that there is
no way to generate a general ratio that covers all conflicts.38 More accurate ratios are
needed that consider the leading causes of non-violent mortality in conflict situations and
recognize the particularities of different contexts, including urban versus rural settings,
and the shifting phases of conflict and post-conflict reverberating effects.3One path forward in the case of the post-9/11 wars is to generate a rough estimate
by applying the Geneva Declaration Secretariat’s average ratio of four indirect for every
one direct death. Though scientific advances propose using varied ratios for each context,
that is outside the scope of the current report. The author’s review suggests that a lower
ratio may be accurate in Iraq, while a higher ratio is likely in today’s humanitarian crisis
situations such as in Afghanistan and Yemen. Across all the war zones, therefore, using an
average four to one ratio can generate a reasonable and conservative estimate.
Applying this ratio to Costs of War’s calculation of 905,000 – 940,000 directly killed
in the post-9/11 wars yields between 3,620,000 – 3,760,000 indirect deaths (3.6 – 3.8
million). Thus, the total figure of post-9/11 war deaths, including direct and indirect, could
be 4,525,000 – 4,700,000, roughly 4.5 – 4.7 million.

Another seminar I'm teaching is a more straightforward moral/political philosophy class called "Oppression and Resistance" We'll read closely three major accounts of oppression in feminist philosophy (Marilyn Frye, I.M. Young, Ann Cudd) and see what forms of resistance they make visible
Description out of the course catalogue:

Oppression and Resistance
N.N.
Kommentar

In this seminar, students will gain a robust foundation in contemporary and historical theories of oppression. This includes an understanding of how oppression is caused by social structures, institutions, norms, and practices, as well as how multiple forms of oppression—including oppression based on class, race, ability, sexual identity, and gender—work together and reinforce one another. Through key texts from social and political philosophy, including feminist philosophy, critical philosophy of race, and historical political philosophy, the seminar will clarify terms such as epistemic oppression, structural and institutional oppression, intersectionality, and cultural imperialism. We will then explore contemporary philosophical debates about resistance to oppression, including questions of how resistance should be defined, what it entails, and how those who seek justice should navigate the political demands and moral obligations imposed by an oppressive society.

Wow, shucks, thanks everyone 😊 I guess this is where I share that I'm teaching two seminars this fall, including one called "Black Feminist Social Philosophy" Here's the course description and first unit:
Entry in the course catalogue:

Black Feminist Social Philosophy
N.N.

Kommentar

Black women's thought in the afterlife of transatlantic slavery has generated conceptual tools that are today central for liberatory movements around the world: intersectionality, identity politics, erotic empowerment, the unity of all anti-oppressive struggles. Academic philosophy, however, has only haltingly recognized and integrated these intellectual contributions. Black women have long been excluded from the discipline of philosophy in Europe and the Americas, and their commitments and insights have too often been treated as narrow and particular. In this seminar, students will grapple with black feminist intellectual production as a philosophical enterprise, while exploring how black women’s interpretations of social phenomena contribute critical resources to social philosophy. Students will gain a grasp of canonical texts in US black feminist theorizing, and they will learn to use philosophy skillfully to examine overlapping oppressions and politics of liberation. Students will also reflect on philosophical methodology—perhaps more than our training usually encourages—to see how the discipline’s conditions of scholarly production filter and steer inquiry away from the commitments at the heart of black feminist analysis. @tao Evidently, AI's solution of valuable open problems in mathematics is not for mathematicians; the eventual audience for this effort is those (companies) who are willing and able to pay to "employ" such AI in their "workforce". A dynamic that causes academic inflation - people getting more advanced degrees to give themselves a competitive edge in being hired to work for a company, rather than the desire for more advanced work in the field - seems identical to the one incentivising the present AI dynamic.

"Had you entered that afternoon you would have thought you saw a man planting something in a boy's palm"
The Gift
By Li-Young Lee
To pull the metal splinter from my palm
my father recited a story in a low voice.
I watched his lovely face and not the blade.
Before the story ended, he’d removed
the iron sliver I thought I’d die from.

I can’t remember the tale,
but hear his voice still, a well
of dark water, a prayer.
And I recall his hands,
two measures of tenderness
he laid against my face,
the flames of discipline
he raised above my head. Had you entered that afternoon
you would have thought you saw a man
planting something in a boy’s palm,
a silver tear, a tiny flame.
Had you followed that boy
you would have arrived here,
where I bend over my wife’s right hand.

Look how I shave her thumbnail down
so carefully she feels no pain.
Watch as I lift the splinter out.
I was seven when my father
took my hand like this,
and I did not hold that shard
between my fingers and think,
Metal that will bury me,
christen it Little Assassin,
Ore Going Deep for My Heart.
And I did not lift up my wound and cry,
Death visited here!
I did what a child does
when he’s given something to keep.
I kissed my father.

So much ugliness in the archives about the case "Power" deals with. Here are two clippings from a newspaper about the case and that woman, who herself worked in the carceral system. I think Lorde read this article, because she mirrors the quote "They almost killed me..." in an interview. Harrowing
Newspaper clipping:

Policeman 'The Victim'

The defense had contended that Mr. Armstead-with whom Officer Shea's partner, Officer Walter Scott; testified that he had exchanged shots-would have been charged with attempted murder of an officer until "the heat was put on" by the community and
"the po-
liceman became the victim.
Although the jurors generally declined .to
say outright who
had offered the longest resistance to an acquittal verdict, Angelo
Sicurella,
a textile
worker from Jackson Heights, said that "whatever problems the holdout had with the evi-lence" during yesterday's de-liberations;
"she-that is,
she
or he-said this morning,
'OK,
I've seen enough-fll go with the majority.'
The 4-foot-10-inch Mrs. Camp: bell; who is a supervisor of probation investigations with ihe State
Supreme Court in
Manhattan, was tearful 'and initially reluctant to comment as the fended off microphones and , pencil-carrying reporters with
her back literally to the wall
at Luigi's.
"They almost killed me, and I almost killed them," she said eventually concerning the
concerning the jury's delibera-tions. She said she had requested unsuccessfully that the jury be'allowed to visit the scene of the shooting because of a "con-glomeration of inconsistency" among the witnesses' stories.
"I went through every pagc «if the testimony- couldn't sleep at all last night-and I'm satisfied
justice has been
clore,"
Mrs. Campbell said.
"My conscience is clear, and I ran sleep tonight. And I'm ex• hausted. Can't you tell?"Within a half hour after the :, verdict was announced at 11:20 : A.M., Officer Shea and his de-
" fense lawyer," Jacob' Evresoff,
" and others had adjourned to the dining room of Luigi's, a restaurant: two blocks up ; Queens Boulevard from the courthouse. Iucluded in the party was a staff lawyer for the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association and two police-of-ficer bodyguards who had beën with the defendant during the four-week trial.
When most of the jury filed into the bar of the restaurant shortly afterward, the now-ebullient Officer Shea went in to shake hands briefly and to plant a kiss on the cheek of Mrs. Ederica Campbell, the only black as well as the only woman on the jury.
"She's going to be put through hell," he said after he had returned to his table. "I give her a lot of credit—I give the law a lot of credit. Police officers will realize they will get justice, even if there is pressure from the community, unless it's - blatant murder-which this wasn't."

Here's another, a later poem of Lorde's that speaks directly to Crystal's point, but now instead of addressing whiteness Lorde's addressing her brothers and sisters in struggle, cautioning not to be sold on empty promises:
There Are No Honest Poems
About Dead Women
(by Audre Lorde)

What do we want from each other
after we have told our stories
do we want
to be healed do we want
mossy quiet stealing over Our scars
do we want
the powerful unfrightening sister
who will make the pain go away
mother's voice in the hallway
you've done it right
the first time darling
you will never need
to do it again.

Thunder grumbles on the horizon
I buy time with another story
a pale blister of air
cadences of dead flesh
obscure the vowels.

Audre Lorde has poems speaking to what Crystal is saying here. The one that puts the knife in my ribs is called "Conclusion", written to her white husband (the father of her Black children) on the occasion of their separation in 1970
Conclusion

Passing men in the street who are dead
becomes a common occurrence
but loving one of them
is no solution.
I believe in love as I believe in our children
but I was born Black and without illusions
and my vision
which differs from yours
is clear
although sometimes restricted.
I have watched you at midnight
moving through casual sleep
wishing I could afford the non-desperate dreams
that stir you
to wither and fade into partial solutions.
Your nights are wintery long and very young
full of symbols of purity and forgivenessfull of symbols of purity and forgiveness
and a meek jesus that rides through your cities
on a barren ass whose braying
does not include a future tense.
But I wear my nights as I wear my life
and my dying
absolute and unforgiven
nuggests of compromise and decision
fossilized by fierce midsummer sun
and when I dream
I move through a Black land
where the future
glows eternal and green
but where the symbols for now
are bloody and unrelenting
rooms
where confused childrenwith wooden stumps for fingers
play at war
who cannot pick up their marbles
and run away home
whenever nightmare threatens.

"As Bachelors Very

Frodo Baggins
Danna Petersen-Deeprose, Queen's University - Kingston, Ontario

Abstract
Queer Tolkien scholarship has seen a number of homosexual readings of Frodo Baggins. While there are indeed many elements within the text that support a queer reading, it is a mistake to insist that queer elements necessarily point to homosexuality. This article advances an alternative queer reading of Frodo: an asexual reading.

I yearn for a world where US protests were covered by news media the way the Italian press is covering this 🥹 No “protests turned violent”. No “clashes between protesters and police”. Just telling it like it is: people protesting within their rights, and police attacking them for doing so.
From Deutsche Welle:

Protests in central Bologna

On Monday, a demonstration was held in Bologna's famous Piazza del Nettuno. Italian news agency ANSA reported that some protestors chanted anti-police slogans and one threw a firecracker, but that demonstrators were largely peaceful.

ANSA added police responded with tear gas and water cannons.

CfP: Rethinking Agency under Non-Ideal
Conditions
The notion of agency plays a central role across many areas of philosophy, including philosophy of action, ethics, political philosophy, epistemology, feminist philosophy, and phenomenology. While traditionally conceptualized in terms of intentional action, rational control, and autonomy, our understanding of agency has recently come under intense scrutiny and is now being increasingly transformed. Feminist and phenomenological approaches, in particular, have emphasized the need for a richer and more fine-grained conception of agency-one that takes seriously the social, historical, and relational contexts in which agents are situated.
From this perspective, agency cannot be adequately understood without acknowledging that agents are not only rational decision-makers, but also emotional, embodied, desiring, creative, and affective beings.Confirmed speakers: Maria Alvarez, Havi Carel, Hanne Jacobs, Quill Kukla, Kristina Musholt and Caleb Ward.
The conference will take place at the University of Graz, March 3-5 2027.
We invite you to submit an anonymized abstract of up to 500 words by October 31, 2026 to laurentia.adam@uni-graz.at
Please include a separate file with your name, email address, the title of your talk, and your affiliation (if any) and put 'Rethinking Agency Graz 2027' in the subject line.
