New preprint led by grad student Caleb Charpentier that I'm very excited about! This is a hefty review & perspective on how we can close the gap in trust between new "Deep comparative methods", and the biological meaning & inferences that systematists want. ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...

An intuition for universal function approximation. A neural network with one hidden layer can form a weighted sum of sigmoid functions applied to weighted and shifted inputs. With that in mind, this figure illustrates the intuition behind the universal approximation results of Cybenko (1989) and Hornik et al. (1989) in one input dimension. More generally, neural networks can approximate mappings between high-dimensional numerical inputs and outputs. Because images, videos, CT scans, text, and conventional trait measurements can all be encoded numerically, this capacity allows neural networks to map complex patterns in any of these data sources onto other numerical representations or predictions.

I've updated my job search dashboard to be a bit visually easier to deal with, and RSS feeds are now included. It scrapes ecoevojobs.net, evoldir.net, and jobs.sciencecareers.org. Here is the site, if any EcoEvo people want a convenient job search tool: calebcharpentier.com/EcoEvoJobSearcher

I am thrilled to announce I'll be starting as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at New Mexico State University this Fall! I can't wait to work with some amazing colleagues and students amidst the sky islands of the SW! Woooo more ecophysiology, evolution, and snails!
