updates: still no word from the living expenses folks at insurance, love that. most of the demo is complete, revealing a lot less damage than there could have been. still pretty surreal. hopefully we’ll be back in sooner than originally expected since they didn’t have to rip out the kitchen.

very happy Pompey. integration with the resident cats is basically complete. They don’t like each other still but everybody’s willing to pile on our bed at night without waging war.

surprise, Pompey is still here! we thought we’d have to step up efforts to find him a new home, but turns out we just needed to actually let the cats see each other for more than tense glimpses. still a work in progress (along with his weepy eyes) but things are getting better!!

craft show and tell time! just finished my moon moth sweater which was not intentionally timed to coincide with Artemis II, but I’ll take it. yarn is from spun right round, it fits perfectly, and I am very proud of my added hip shaping, faux side seams, and ladder back jacquard on the new moon

The Morning Neesy: Our vet can’t see him until Monday, but since he’s pretty stable we’re just rolling with it. If I’m out of the room for a while, he needs a prolonged cuddle session when I return before he goes back to his own stuff, and he usually goes to eat the moment I’m inside the door.

proof! from @jordanshiveley.bsky.social! That’s my book! holy shit!
A photo of this quarter’s issue of Fangoria, open to the Nightmare Library section. The Graceview Patient is in the top right segment. Close up of The Graceview Patient review in Fangoria, which calls it “mean and moody”. Hell yeah.

“Margaret Culpepper is at the mercy of a chronic illness called Fayette Gehret Syndrome. In a last-ditch effort to gain back quality of life, she agrees to an experimental treatment at Graceview Hospital. The pain of the treatment is extraordinary as her immune system is slowly destroyed and rebuilt. While wasting away in her hospital bed, she notices a growing presence in the building. She can hear murmur and soon, she can begin to see it. Is she actually recovering? Or is she succumbing to what lives inside the aged walls?

The medical world is elusive by nature, but The Graceview Patient lays the mystery on thicker and freakier. Readers get to know Margaret only through her confusion and discomfort, infusing the whole story with a nervous energy. The legitimacy of her interactions with staff and other patients is debatable, but her perseverance in a fight for wellness and dignity elicits deep empathy. Fans of Jacob's Ladder will devour the air of uncertainty the story exudes. The haunted hospital trope is scary enough, but Starling's sci-fi style transforms it into a hellscape of gooey terror and nosophobia. Strong imagery of needle use, open sores, and bodily slime give the story a grimy edge. A mean and moody medical horror, The Graceview Patient spotlights the tragedy of chronic illness and the predatory practices of a flawed healthcare system.”

I did a fun little photo shoot thing mostly so I could tell on Instagram about The Graceview Patient being out in the US in one week. For your delight, I’ve included what I’m calling the “law and order edit”. text layout is hard okay.
A nitrile-gloved hand touching a hardcover copy of The Graceview Patient. The book is on a metal tray along with unopened alcohol swab packets and two 5ml medical vials I filled with food coloring and glitter, with neat themed stickers on the lids that say “SWAIL PROPRIETARY,” which is a reference to something in the book. The text THE GRACEVIEW PATIENT 7 DAYS UNTIL TREATMENT BEGINS is along the bottom edge, in a font with drop shadowing and outlining very reminiscent of 90s tv and movie title cards, particularly law and order. At least I think so.

A graphic hastily put together in Canva that shows The Starving Saints’ paperback cover. The background of the cover is a bright yellow, the sun has become hot pink compared to the original’s gold, and the text is in black and white. The weird nun with the hive frame and the screaming faces under her wimple is still the same. Around the cover are some hex grids in yellow and hot pink grunge texture. The paperback’s release date is announced as may 5, 2026.

I am entirely not prepared for another book release, but THE GRACEVIEW PATIENT is coming, and it got a starred review from @libraryjournal.bsky.social! Hospital gothic! Unreliable narrator! Yellow Wallpaper meets House MD!
“⭐️ Margaret Culpepper has a rare, incurable autoimmune disorder that has isolated her from her friends and family and is close to costing her her job. When she is offered a paid spot in an experimental medical trial at Graceview Memorial, Margaret jumps at the chance for a better life. She'll stay in the hospital for several months while her immune system is almost completely destroyed and then rebuilt. Once the treatment begins, though, Margaret begins to suspect that she isn't there for a cure. Instead, she seems to be a test subject for something far more sinister. Graceview's patients either emerge as entirely new people or die trying. Struggling to determine what is real, Margaret fights to find a way out before it's too late. The unreliable narrator, questionable medical practices, and eerie atmosphere combine for an intricate, well-written story.

VERDICT Starling's (The Starving Saints) newest novel is the kind of genre-bending tour de force that fans have come to expect from her. Equal parts medical drama, psychological thriller, and gothic horror, the book pulls readers in and refuses to let them go.”
