I'm a science fiction writer whose passion for the genre stretches back to my elementary school's Scholastic book fairs. I have chronicled the faraway worlds and strange beings of my imagination ever since. Visit my website at caitlindemarismckenna.com!

That game was Bloodborne for me. I played the majority of it during 2020-21 in the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic. Something about exploring this brutal world ravaged by plague, where everything wasn't okay and was *allowed* to not be okay, was cathartic for me.

I had a great time at WORD Vancouver meeting other authors and potential readers! #WORDVAncouver #indieauthor
I'm standing behind an 8-foot table decorated with my books in wooden crates painted silver with imitation ferns and dinosaur plushies on top.

Very excited to share I will have a table at WORD Vancouver on September 19th, at Robson Square in downtown Vancouver! Come visit and check out my books at the largest bookish event of the year:
White text against an aqua-blue background reads, "I am exhibiting at WORD Vancouver 2026! Date: September 19th 2026. Venue: UBC Robson Square Rink Level". In the lower righthand corner is an adorable pop-up-book-style graphic of the Loch Ness Monster reading a book while floating on the surface of her eponymous lake.

Thank you to all the readers, authors and volunteers who made the first BC Author Book Fair a resounding success! We had over 500 attendees 😮 Hello from my booth, where I spent the day talking to lovely readers. Our mascot Creamsicle says hello and that she hopes some of you will become fans!
A photo of yours truly (I'm white, fem nonbinary with short brown hair, green rimmed glasses, and wearing a black hemp jacket, teal tank top and olive green capris.) I'm leaning down to pet our mascot for the day, a pale orange long-necked dinosaur plushie with an orange back ruff and spots. She sits on a bed of fake grass atop a wooden crates holding copies of my books Halcyon and The Athabasca Project.

You're in for a treat, imo. The web series explores even more of what Async Corp is up to in exploring the Backrooms and deepens the lore while remaining consistent - something not all of the Backrooms content does from what I've read.

Another useful service falling prey to AI enshittification. This time it's Linktree. Thank you to those who posted helpful indie alternatives in the comments!

I did my homework by watching the entire Kane Pixels Backrooms series on YouTube the week before. I think the movie admirably succeeds for viewers who haven't seen it, but there are some rewarding Easter eggs if you have. #Backrooms #horror

Saw the Backrooms movie yesterday (with a very vocal teen audience who were clearly familiar with its viral roots. It's okay -- they quieted down after the opening sequence). The movie did not disappoint: a delve into liminal horror that explores both the repulsion and attraction of its subject.

Bandcamp and Soundcloud (the latter mostly for EDM and electronic artists). I also discover new music on YouTube, but do my best to also buy music from my favorite artists.

Catch-22 was my grandfather's favorite novel. He also flew bomber missions in WWII. I still think about what he saw that Catch-22 expressed so well for him.

A fundamental issue with AI is that exists to generate unlimited amounts of media, but the value and meaning of media comes from how finite and limited it is, so its very existence makes anything like it worthless and meaningless. It is a technology that devalues itself and our culture.

You could say last night I rediscovered poetry as an art form that can do much more than create pretty phrases. A good slam poem can do the same work as a short story or a piece of investigative journalism. Let's go, poets!

The vibes in the performance space were electric, each poem feeling more like a conversation as audience members snapped their fingers, murmured and hummed to the lines being said. One spectator cheered each competitor on with "Let's go, poet!"

That changed last night when I attended the final rounds of the Verses 2026 Slam Poetry championship here in Vancouver. There were some truly powerful performances that showed the range and impact of spoken word to evoke politics, identity, memory, history.

I've often bounced off poetry and felt it wasn't for me. I write fiction - I prefer when what I'm reading or listening to has a clear message even if couched in metaphor. Poetry often feels too abstract to me.

I was inspired by books such as Dune by Frank Herbert and the Otherland series by Tad Williams, which also include these textual epigraphs at the start of their chapters. It's a cool way to enrich the world outside the central characters' story.

I recently read proofs for my novel Halcyon as I get ready to publish the paperback version, and am remembering how much fun I had writing the epigraphs! Each chapter starts with a piece of text from the setting - everything from fictional research papers to poetry. #amwriting

Got my D2D royalty spreadsheet today. Apparently I sold an Expansion series box set to the National Library of Malaysia. 😮 I always get excited by international sales, especially outside the Anglophone world. It's a neat reminder my books are out there for the world to find!

I was looking through some old pictures I made for my newsletter when I came across a fun one I made of my writing desk, with helpful labels. Writers, what does your set up look like? I'd love to see the places where our community works! #WritingCommunity #writinglife

Great advice here. Sometimes writer's block is really boredom with your current routine. Changing it up with a new prompt or short project can do wonders! #writinglife

I read Ursula K Le Guin's anarchist sci-fi novel The Dispossessed earlier this year. It impressed me with its prescience for being published in the '60s. Then, like now, many ordinary people are looking for a different way to organize society. The one we have is not working for most people.
