Do you remember Elbe and Alba, our twins born in 2023? Here they are now, fully grown at three years old. 🤩 Twins are incredibly unusual in reindeer and as they don't produce enough milk for two calves, we handreared Alba ourselves. It's wonderful to see them both thriving three years later!

We have a few cows and calves back in the hill enclosure now, who are currently making our lives hard by sitting round the back of the enclosure hill each morning, meaning we frequently have to walk out to retrieve them. Here's Pumpkin and Feta and their calves heading in past Black Loch.
It's a misty morning and two reindeer cows and their calves are walking towards the camera, past a loch on the left. The sun is coming through the mist and it's a glorious day.

Last month it was fire all over the mountains... this month it's SPIDERS! 🕷️ Though actually they are meant to be there and are not at all unwelcome (unlike the fire)! But these misty mornings pick out the cobwebs beautifully😃
A cobweb is suspended between pine branches and covered in dew, making it much more visible than normal.

The rut is just around the corner... Stripping the velvet skin from the antlers occurs once the antlers are fully grown and calcified, the blood supply has cut off so the velvet skin then sloughs away. It looks gory but there is no feeling left in the antlers, so it's not painful at all.
A reindeer bull stands facing to the right, with the skin hanging in strips off his antlers. The antlers are stained red underneath, and the whole look is rather gory!

Getting photos of the reindeer just now with their heads up can be difficult as they spend so much time grazing! During the summer, the reindeer make the most of the rich grazing which allows them to grow a new set of antlers and to put on fat reserves for the winter.
