Although it's only October, El Nino has prompted a statewide emergency declaration across the state. This is the first heat strike this far into the year. The outside temperature broke 90 degrees this month, and that’s not even including the humidity which can make the heat feel even worse!

Management is supposed to take action to protect us from heat illness. It’s the law. We’ve never been trained on heat illness prevention. The most we’ve been able to do is bring in our own cooling devices, open the door, and around a year ago, the older manager brought a sprayer, which left us wet.

One of our co-workers was working at the steamer where we make tortillas when her head started hurting and she started feeling nauseous. She told the manager that she felt like she was going to throw up from the heat but the manager just laughed. Our bosses won’t be laughing now.

Recently, KFC/Taco Bell workers organized a strike in California due to extreme heat. In the 9 years we’ve been working at this store, the AC has never worked or never been turned on, and the thermostat on the wall always reads 84 degrees no matter what the temperature feels like! Enough is enough!

Management at this store has been making our coworker work unpaid after the end of her shift and cheating her out of my paid sick leave and breaks. When she stood up for herself and said she didn’t want to keep working for free, management retaliated, cutting 2 days from her schedule.

Let's be clear: We have the right to report unsafe working conditions without fear of threats, intimidation, or retaliation. We shouldn't be punished for Wienerschnitzel’s failure to maintain the premises in a condition that complies with basic health and safety standards.
Instead of adequately addressing the cockroach infestation, the bosses attempted to shift the blame on us, claiming we contacted the health department. In particular, the store owner has made statements such as, “If you keep calling them [Department of Public Health], you keep losing money.”
