I also wonder if this sort of ‘similar sequel/second scenario works decently enough here as a sort of substitute for replaying the first game with different classes. Or like, as a way of providing that to the player without asking them to replay a 50+ hour rpg

For what it’s worth, I appreciate the little things they threw in. Going up instead of down is a nice inversion, and the idea that there are multiple world trees is interesting (even if it’s just a backdrop). As you’ve said, despite its flaws it’s still a solid time

I’m curious about playing this one purely because the remake jacks up enemy health numbers significantly (theres a different, somewhat OP mechanic they expect you to use so they compensated). Still, this sounds similar to my experience; it feels a lot like a rehash of 1

I see people are doing a ‘9 games that influenced me’ thing and im to tired to do that but I’ll say that I played way to much of the Cars 2008 game on the family mac. It probably even links into why I like MK world when others dont- just driving around a big world like that feels great

Enjoyed the read! Also re: FE and the casual mode/permadeath conundrum. Dark Deity had an interesting alternative where units wouldn’t die but instead receive stat reductions contextualised as injuries. Not perfect but in a game about stat growth I think it works pretty well

Been starting with Honda and now Luke. Its tricky but it’s fun to learn new characters and figure out what normals to use when cornered, what combos and what doesn’t, different walk speeds (Honda’s slow as hell) etc

It’s like when they give an enemy a bolting tome that hits my guys from 10 spaces away. I thought they wanted me to walk towards the enemy so I could hit them, but if I do that then I get hit. Thats not right. That’s not just.

Tbf, there’s little bits and pieces. But most of the stuff they say is stuff that any other villager could have said. For creatures you’re supposed to talk to every day it’s surprising how little variation on dialogue there is

Leaned recently that animal crossing fans dislike how villagers have zero personality in New Horizons, especially compared to New Leaf. This is interesting to me because one of the worst things about NL is that villagers have zero personality

To some degree, the game wants to be a fashion game- there’s three seperate clothing stores on main street that update daily- but makes it a hassle to actually play as a fashion game. New leaf has a lot of moments like this

Like, I’d like to finish these outfits and find what matches with them. But then I look at the inventory screen and it all just seems like too much of a hassle. (And you can only have four mannequins which kind of sucks. On top of the fact that it took me so long to get them)

Oh also don’t feel bad looking up a guide for some things. There’s a couple stats they don’t explain well lol. And idk about you, but I have a lot more fun if I know ahead of time who needs to be recruited with who and what conditions will unlock extra chapters, etc.

Tbh I started out in a similar fashion (just without the 10 year gap haha). Started Fe7, got halfway through Fe8, and finally went back and beat 7. It can take a while before it clicks. Best of luck! You can do it!!

btw if you want to get into SRPGs I think Fire Emblem 7 is a good starting point. Has a pretty sizeable intro/tutorial that acts as the first arc of the game, and the characters are great. From there the world is your oyster…

Like say what you will about Persona (it’s got problems) but they at least have 3 different games and casts they want you to care about. Dragon Quest seems to want you to play as many of them as you can. FF’s vibe for a while now has been ‘hey man, we have 7. Take it or leave it’

Like apparently that new HD-2d FF Mobile remake has characters from through the whole series, but you wouldnt know it by watching the trailers. They literally have only shown cloud and sephiroth. Its bizarre. And it’s boring!

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (2016 ver.) I appreciate how unique this game is and I’ve had some fun with it, but it really feels a bit like ‘death by a thousand papercuts’. There’s a lot of tedium and frustration here. Decorating your house is cool, but the scoring system discourages creativity

In my house with probably my favourite villager, Nibbles (but even then, they’re all kind of similar). This room scores poorly as it is a mishmash of furniture sets, and has since been replaced entirely with the Green series. I like my little outfit. I do wish it was easier to assemble other ones though, it would’ve taken too long and so I really just stuck with this dress

I still feel pretty bad at the game and I make really obvious mistakes all the time, but it’s nice to know that some parts of my practice have been paying off (DI reactions and proper whiff punishes have been big, still working on em. No mastery of drive rush yet, though…)

My sister tells me that genshin has implemented a Roblox mode where users make the content and it basically makes no sense as an addition to that game and isn’t very good. I boot up Fortnite and it’s 15 different battle passes shoved in my face. Games can get so much worse!!
