I write things that explain other things for USA TODAY NETWORK in Florida. I also take pictures, mostly for me. My opinions are my own and I only agree with about half of them. He/him.

Stuff you see walking your dog in the morning in Florida. An early-morning SpaceX Falcon 9 launch from Cape Canaveral left the remains of a "jellyfish" in the sky. It was gone within five minutes.
A jellyfish-looking cloud, caused by expanding sunlight reflecting off rocket exhaust, formed after a SpaceX launch.

This is absolutely certainly legit.

Seufert was filming a documentary on Gorey when he died. He still plans to make that doc, but in the meantime, these are the last interviews he had, largely unedited, along with dozens of photos of Gorey’s house as it was immediately after his death. 2/?
Some of the thousands of books Gorey had, on all topics and in multiple languages, in every room of his Cape Cod home. Gorey’s drawing table, with more stuff everywhere and ink splotches from the occasional cat-related incident.

So far, nothing on my Amazon’s “About Me” page is particularly revealing. Speculative fiction? Art books? Canon gear? Comfy shoes? Yup. It’s also skewed, since I generally only use Amazon these days for last-minute, just-remembered gifts for people.

THANK YOU! I couldn’t remember the name of the place, my friend just brought us down without telling us anything about it. One of my favorite experiences from the whole week. Didn’t take many pics, it seemed rude, but I had to get one.

Thrifting and used-bookstore-browsing the last couple of weeks has produced a fair cross-section of my interests.
A stack of used books. Metatropolis, edited by John Scalzi; How to Write and Sell Imaginative Stories, by the de Camps; The Compleat Ankh-Morpork City Guide, by Terry Pratchett (with map!); Strange Stains and Mysterious Smells, by Terry Jones;
Griffin & Sabine by Nick Bantok; Groucho and Me (1st edition!) by Groucho Marx;
a beat up copy of The Annotated Sherlock Holmes Vol. 1;
Kevin Smith’s Secret Stash (history of his creative works, with physical ephemera stuck in everywhere);
Queer Youth in Focus; Browser's Dictionary, by John Ciardi;
Abandoned Places; and Pop Painting by Camilla d’Errico.

Saw “Coyote v. Acme.” I liked it, and I have a very, very low tolerance for any WB cartoons featuring the original characters made without Tex Avery, Chuck Jones or Mel Blanc. It was funny, had lots of callbacks, and avoided several missteps that frankly I was expecting.

During his no-frills, “self-indulgent”!tour back in 2018 he performed a new, straight up cover every encore and I suspect he liked it enough to keep doing it. I saw him at the Apollo in NYC. He said he chose a song to honor the venue’s rich history. Then he sang “Cinnamon Girl” by Neil Young.

A significant portion of the store is devoted to graphic novels and DVDs/Blu Ray. Upgraded some I already had and found a few I’d been looking for. Also they have games. A lot.
Part, but not all of their games section. Shelves and heaps of board games. A board game called “House of Psychotic Women.” I didn’t get it, as the back was blank and gave no indication of the innards. But I’m regretting it.

Nice section of old and signed books (alas, the only Edward Gorey books I saw were in there, at ruinous prices, so I assume they’re signed). Saw a couple of Heinlein and Pratchett books in there.

Thrifting got a little out of hand, as we decided to check out Brightline Books in Casselberry. I’d always passed it by before, as ita sign says it’s a Christian bookstore. It does, in fact, have a lot of religious books, of all stripes but mostly Christian. It ALSO has tons of other stuff.
Some of these are from thrift stores, the bulk are from BrightLight. Decent prices and lots of used stuff. Also two Harmony Kingdom pieces, a laddy bug and a chair full of cats.

I didn’t get the webspinning hand popcorn bucket. It was wonderfully corny, but I liked the apartment building one better. I suspect the others are on eBay already, when I got a refill on the way out the popcorn guy said they sold out quick.

Walking out of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Holy hell. The last one delighted me too much to be knocked off the top spot, but this Spider-Man is the most New York yet. Not as bright as the others, grungy in the right ways. Excellent performances by everyone, amazing fight scenes, humor and heart.

The new Roku TV Home Screen finally rolled out to me. My screen, which for ages was mercifully free of most of the crap other streaming services have, loaded ‘em up. On the left, what it was. On the right, what it is now. Fortunately you can, at least for now, hide it all in Settings. So I did.
Roku’s former home screen. Big app icons, one easily ignored ad to the left, three suggested things on top (just added recently). New Roku TV Home Screen. More suggested stuff on top, a Quick Access list of the 8 apps I use most often, in alphabetical order (not the order of must use, can’t move them), more suggestions underneath, and finally my full list of apps. Big push for Live TV, which I don’t use.

My wife, who has read maybe 15-20 fiction books for fun in the 40+ years since high school, picked up “To Say Nothing of The Dog” by @conniewillisdotnet.bsky.social and is now burning through it. I am very carefully *not* rushing to dump all of my Willis books on her for fear of scaring her off.

Are the Brits right? OK, I’ll try your beans-for-breakfast thing. I even bought your preferred brand to be fair. Verdict: Ehh. Tasted fine (not quite as sweet as the US version, no surprise there), but it didn’t quite gel for me for breakfast. I suspect I’m missing the cultural nostalgia.

Saw “Supergirl.” I liked it. It’s not triumphant or inspirational like “Superman.” It’s a darker story of two women, their grief, and revenge. So I doubt it will do as well in the box office. But I liked it better for not being sunny and silly. And there were still funny bits.
