Just out! Reschke, J-O, Cucart-Mora, C, Lomborg, K, Hertler, C, Saqalli, M, Grove, M and Moncel, M-H. 2026. Subsistence Strategies in Agent-Based Models of Foraging Hominins: State of the Art and Challenges. Journal of Computer Applications in Archaeology, 9(1): 135–150. DOI: doi.org/10.5334/jcaa...
Text reading: Hominins lived for most of their history as foragers in complete dependence on plants and animals in their surroundings. Depending on the regions they occupied, the available resources may have differed greatly intra- and inter-annually while shifts in climate altered the available ecosystems over time. How hominins may have behaved under these conditions and adapted to new challenges is increasingly studied using agent-based models (ABMs), as they allow researchers to recreate different behavioural and environmental scenarios and test the consequences (i.e., home range size, viability of the group). The goal of this article is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on ABMs simulating hominin foraging behaviour and connected processes, highlighting key findings, methodologies and theoretical frameworks. Our analysis reveals several prominent trends in the application of ABMs focused on hominin foraging behaviour, including the use of optimal-foraging (OFT) or central-place foraging (CPF) approaches. Additionally, we identify common challenges faced by researchers, such as implementing suitable reactions of the hominins to varying environmental conditions without relying on CPF, the difficulties in implementing comprehensive interactions between foragers and how to observe and interpret the resulting behaviour. This paper underscores the importance of refining ABMs to better capture the complexity of subsistence strategies in foraging hominins. We propose future directions for research that could enhance model accuracy and applicability.

Elections to the 3D Analysis SIG committee will be held at #CAA2026. Details below if you're interested in joining, and more info about the SIG can be found here: caa-international.org/special-inte...
3D Analysis SIG board elections

The members of the 3D Analysis SIG (Special Interest Group) Board are elected for a minimum term of 3 years with the right to be re-elected for a second term. All Board positions will be open to interested eligible candidates.

1. General Information about the Board of CAA-GR

The 3D Analysis SIG provides a platform for bringing together researchers and practitioners to address the methodological, technical, and theoretical challenges of working with 3D data, from acquisition to analysis and dissemination. A founding goal of the group is to explore and advance the scope of 3D Analysis within archaeology. The task of the Board is to meet regularly for the purposes of the SIG. The Board has the right to opt for electronic voting whenever this is deemed appropriate.

2. Call for Candidacies

The current interim board is launching the election procedure for new Board members. All eligible candidates are invited to apply for a Board position. The election of the Board shall take place at the General Meeting (GM) of the SIG during the CAA2026 in Vienna by show of hands.

Submission of candidacy: Candidates should notify the current members of the 3D SIG Board for their willingness to stand for election by sending an email to the SIG’s email address (3d.analysis@caa-international.org) by Monday, February 16th 2026. In their email, the candidates should include a letter of intent (max. 1 page) and a short CV (max. 1 page) with webpage address and ORCHID-ID.
All information on candidates will be made accessible via the CAA-International and/or national channels.

3. Important Dates

Candidacy period open: Friday, 2 January 2026
Deadline for candidates: Monday, 16 February 2026
Voting: CAA2026 conference, Vienna, 31 March – 4 April 20264. Board Members Positions and Responsibilities

The 3D Analysis SIG is administered by six Board members. The Chair provides coordination for the group. The Chair is responsible for making sure that the SIG’s activities are planned effectively, conducted according to the CAA-International constitution and that matters are handled in an orderly, efficient manner. They must be willing to commit a not insubstantial effort to the building of the community over the duration of their tenure.

Apart from the Board’s Chair the remaining 5 positions have undifferentiated roles, to be further attuned by the newly elected board. Board members are expected to share steering responsibilities and workload as much as possible. All Board members act as representatives of the 3D Analysis SIG community in CAA International conference meetings and activities. They are expected to attend the CAA-International and National Chapters conferences to the best of their ability and work in connection with the relevant CAA-International committees to actively promote and coordinate the 3D Analysis SIG activities.

At least one position on the Board is reserved for a PhD student.
Candidates should indicate whether they opt for the Chair position.
Geographic diversity is encouraged to enable broad international participation, and presence in forthcoming CAA International conferences.
