New paper out from our team, documenting successful breeding by reintroduced reticulated flatwoods salamander in three ponds! We worked for a decade on habitat restoration, then translocated a few hundred larvae for 2-3 years. 🌏🧪 Open access doi.org/10.1111/csp2...

Heard the most inspiring talk this afternoon by @shannonvallor.bsky.social, the perfect message for Aims of Edu starting the academic year. A big exhortation to faculty to open the trap of AI in which our students are caught. And to the students ❤️ "AI is not the future. You are the future." 🧪🌍🍎

Inside the effort to save one of America's most imperiled salamanders
When a species is facing extinction, it takes an enormous human effort to stave it off. Case in point: the painstaking campaign to save the frosted flatwoods salamander.

Recent publication from our lab group provides a "recipe" for wetland restoration in fire-suppressed longleaf pine flatwoods, resulting in more than doubling the number of ponds with breeding populations of reticulated flatwoods salamanders. 🌏🧪 conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

My latest for @instbirdpop.bsky.social ! This was our 2024 winter card illustration - a break from the snow, since the end of the year comes to the tropics too! Featuring a nosa' luta (Zosterops rotensis) chowing down on a caterpillar plucked off a trongkon guåfi (Serianthes nelsonii) 🎨🪶🐡🌏 #birdart
Digital illustration of a bright green and yellow little songbird with a ring of white feathers around the eye (nosa' luta, Rota White-eye) perched on a flowering stalk of a canopy tree (trongkon guåfi, håyun lågu, Guam fire tree). The flowers are in a cluster of three, formed of a little green bud with a small white tubular-shaped flower pointed upright, from which emerges a dazzling burst of hot pink feathery stamens. The bird has a caterpillar in its mouth, showing a potential for helping the trees defend from their herbivores. Both the bird and the tree are critically endangered.

It took more than a decade of field work by a large and dedicated crew, and several years of data wrangling by postdocs, graduate students, and research associates, and great support from sponsors and colleagues, but exciting to see it come together! 🧪 🌎 doi.org/10.1643/h202...
