Love the Orioles but it's more enthusiasm than informed opinions

There's not much danger of a Republican winning that seat, fortunately!

Hey it looks like they cancelled the listings for these. Did they email you telling you your bid was cancelled or anything?

Very weird that we permit pill mills which sell counterfeit drugs!

Wasn't there a thing about how many LED street lights were an unsettling blue color for a few years because of a manufacturing defect? Is it possible that caused a spike in spending over the past few years?

Bedrock edition of Minecraft is the version which you can play on a console or on your phone. It's optimized for those purposes. But the menuing, precisely placing blocks, etc are all significantly more challenging. Nevermind that he appears to be playing on a controller rather than a mouse/keyboar

Excuse me no one talking about this has mentioned that this is on bedrock edition

Maryland taxpayers can't pay for on field talent, but can pay to make the stadium nicer. The incentives are kind of weird!

The ballpark app knows (presumably) all my "song of the game" votes and how many pretzels I bought. It knows how the starters did when I bought a hot dog before the third inning. Baseball fans like that kind of stuff! Of course, we also probably don't like being reminded of the surveillance state

I've thought for a while that the Ballpark app should do stuff like this. Give me a wrapped for the season

Your lifetime chances of getting struck by lightning is like rolling three natural 20s followed by rolling a 10 or better. The chance that Baltimore gets hit this century by a meteor at least as large as the one that hit Chelyabinsk in 2013. That's 4 natural 20s followed by at least a 14.

The fangraphs odds say that the orioles need to roll two consecutive natural 20s followed by rolling at least an eight.

Those don't seem to be very important, no. Either intentionality, motivation, and freedom come from physical processes and we are on the same footing as the machines or they come from souls which the machines have and we lack

Americans vote for Democrats to punish republicans for bad governance. And when no one needs to be punished they vote for Republicans, our default rulers.

So the answer seems to be either that humans have souls or that humans and chatbots are similarly autonomous. Maybe both!

This CDC data is here: www.cdc.gov/wastewater/r... This kind of data is reasonably hard to fake. The main threat is that they will stop publishing it.

This is great and also it's an effective (free to taxpayers) subsidy for solar companies that are missing out on federal subsidies this year

Some of which are caused by short-sighted regulation! "Let them build a diesel plant so they don't interconnect and cause grid pain" is as bad a policy as "let them interconnect and make household rate-payers cover the upgrades" which is as bad a policy as "ban all growth"

If AI is successful the idea is that a larger share of the proceeds of production will go to capital instead of labor. It is possible for capitals share to increase while labor's absolute income rises. I don't know what bet I would make either way on that. What do you think?
100
Clark @c1ark.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
We keep careful track of income and we measure inequality with something called the Gini coefficient. 0 is perfectly equal, 100 means one person has all the income. fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=1YgBg

Income inequality went up a lot from 1980-2000ish but inequality today is about what it was in 2006. It ebbs and flows a little but it's mostly stopped the meteoric rise.

Is there a reason to think "doing okay or living comfortably" in 2025 is better or worse than "doing ok or living comfortably" in 2013? My baseline assumption would be that they're similar.

And for questions about your personal experience you want responses which evoke your personal experience (like 'just getting by'). But for questions about your opinion on something, "good" and "bad" work fine. The responses given are made to manipulate people into saying what they really think!
010
Clark @c1ark.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
It has to do with a general bias towards pleasantness. "Is the economy excellent, good, only fair, or bad?" Leaves a soft bad option to respond to. If they say "only fair" and you ask why, they answer with a grievance or complaint. Some people, though, will never say bad!

Well they blocked me. It's a thoroughly validated scale for survey questions. Just about any survey considers "fair" or "only fair" on a four point scale to be negative. It's a kind of flat eartherism to declare the whole field of survey design wrong on a topic.

I'm happy to remake the chart for you with the missing positive responses. Though I should caution you that survey methodologists treat "only fair" as sub par. So we would be making the chart worse by the standards of experts.
000
Clark @c1ark.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Offering the same options to different kinds of questions would make the data worse. One question asks about your lived experience. Another asks about your opinion of something. The study designers are very careful about this because they want to find out what people's personal finances are like!
000
Clark @c1ark.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
This chart is fine. Your objection to it doesn't make sense to me. But I'm offering to display the data according to your preferences to see if the data says something different.

Clark @c1ark.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
