A side note, but notably, the coalition agreement of the new German government explicitly supports the introduction of the digital euro. And, they want cash and at least one DIGITAL PAYMENT option to be gradually offered as a general rule (!)

Leaving #ISA2025 I had to think about these pictures that I took in New York after Trump was elected in 2016. Trump 2 is more radical and dangerous, seriously threatening science in the US. While we discussed it with disbelieve and worry, it was only a background noise in public life.

The digital euro is a financial infrastructure that seeks to further European security rationales. Currently, European payments heavily depend on non-European providers, making them vulnerable to sanctions and other restrictions coming from the US admin.

Digital money is data. Transactional data is also used for commercial purposes. The ECB restricts its own ability to monitors user data. The framework also sets limits for commercial actors (banks and other service providers) to use transactional data. These are steps in the right direction.
