My mom craved a Filet-O-Fish today, so I went to McDonald’s. I was shocked it costs nearly $8. ($6.99 minus CA tax.) In 2019, the avg price was $4. Can’t be tariff-related since the fish is allegedly wild caught in Alaska. Adjusted for inflation (since ‘19) it should cost $5.19.

This story was written a decade ago btw. If you didn’t see any of these details in today’s coverage of Bobby Cox’s death, that says a lot about today’s sports media landscape.
What isn’t often talked about when we talk about Bobby Cox’s legacy is domestic violence, but perhaps it should be. Cox is just one in a line of men Major League Baseball chooses to celebrate for their on-field accomplishments while overlooking or forgetting about their off-field violence against women. The reference to his domestic violence incident with his wife is even conspicuously absent from his Wikipedia page.

What's inside that food supplement bottle? Possible danger, not a path toward getting fit.

You know those disclaimers for Viagra, Cialis and Levitra about seeking medical help for erections lasting longer than four hours? This guy was aroused far longer than that and -- despite medical intervention -- he suffered from penile fibrosis and was left with permanent erectile dysfunction.
The adverse-event report -- which came from a doctor at the hospital where this man was treated --- claimed that Viapro didn't list any ingredients that would have caused such a reaction similar to a side effect of
prescription erectile dysfunction drugs.
Later tests by the FDA showed Viapro contained hio-methisosildenafil, a chemical that is similar to sildenafil (Viagra).

Supplements don't need pre-market approval like pharmaceuticals, even when they are often more dangerous since anyone can buy them without a prescription. While hamstrung by 1994's Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, the FDA still could do way more. 🔗 abcnews.com/Health/story...

What occurred last week with the Red Sox jerseys is the latest example as upset fans reflexively hammered Fanatics on social media—and the team's initial statement stoked that outcry. Fanatics tried to head this controversy off in the planning stages. www.latimes.com/sports/story...
The Red Sox picked the design of the new home jerseys from multiple options before they were made at Fanatics’ Pennsylvania plant that has produced MLB jerseys for decades. Those involved in turning the mockup into a finished product informed the Red Sox on multiple occasions that the piping down the middle of the jerseys was too close to the “Red Sox” lettering, a person familiar with the conversations who is not authorized to discuss it publicly told The Times.

The @columjournreview.bsky.social delved into @mississippitoday.org's coverage of the mini-scandal that the outlet created (and still hasn't corrected). www.cjr.org/laurels-and-...
Last Thursday, Mississippi Today reported that the National Park Service removed brochures from the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Home National Monument that called the murderer of Medgar Evers a racist. The article cited Park Service officials who “asked not to be named for fear of retribution.” Evers, a renowned civil rights activist, was assassinated in 1963 by a white supremacist named Byron De La Beckwith in the driveway of his home in Jackson, Mississippi.

Condemnation was swift. “The murder of Medgar Evers was an act of racial terror. That fact is not partisan. It is historical,” Martin Luther King III posted on X in response to the story. “Sanitizing history from violence and racism does not bring the country together. It weakens our understanding of who we are and how far we still have to go.” Senator Raphael Warnock also weighed in: “This administration is celebrating Black History Month by erasing it. We won’t let them get away with it.”

And it would indeed be appalling if the administration were attempting to erase the context of Evers’s killing. There’s just one problem: it appears the brochures may not have been removed or edited at all.

The @theverge.com dug into this issue. www.theverge.com/tech/877235/...
“The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said the doorbell was disabled at 1:47AM on February 1st, and she was not reported missing until the next morning, more than three hours later. By that time, those recordings were no longer accessible to anyone with access to the account. (It’s possible members of the Guthrie family had access to the app; I know I have access to my elderly parents’ video doorbell app.)
But because it had once been in the cloud, there was a chance it could be retrieved. According to Nick Barreiro, chief forensic analyst with Principle Forensics, deleting footage from the cloud doesn’t necessarily mean it’s immediately gone. “When you delete something from a server, it doesn’t get overwritten immediately — the file system is just told to ignore this data, and this space is now available to be used. But if no new data is written over it, it’s still going to be there, even though you can’t see it.”
While it would be fairly straightforward to retrieve this data from a local server or hard drive, Barreiro said the process to retrieve it from Google’s servers was likely much more complicated.
While Barreiro has no direct knowledge of Google’s processes, he spent a decade in law enforcement focused on recorded evidence before moving to the private sector five years ago. “These video files aren’t necessarily all stored on a single server; they are probably stored in fragments in servers all over the world. It probably gets very complicated with Google’s architecture,” he said.”
