So when are we going to see articles on legacy of slavery in the middle ages, the Roman Empire, the Egyptians, etc. Or even slavery that still exists around the world. We get it, slavery is bad, but every country in the world, even Africa has a history of slavery

Slavery has been around since humans beings began, no doubt, and it continues around the world. We should stop whipping ourselves, accept it's a fact and hope we don't go down that route again. In the meantime, help today's victims, by writing those stories, rather that dwelling on the past.

Prices are one aspect, the other is stricter drink drive laws. We are lucky, as we are retired, so eat during the day or early evening and get a bus back.Taxis are too expensive. We live a 10-15 min drive from the town centre and a taxi costs £10-15, depending on the time ofday.Buses stop about 9pm.

It says there are 52 comments on this article, but only 4 are showing. Why?

Having lived in the USA where PBS channels have endless pledge drives, people just don't appreciate the service the BBC provides. Yes, maybe there should fewer channels and not pay their presenters so much. We are currently watching the excellent SAS Rogue Heroes on BBC I-player. Excellent value!

Yes, Streeting would have run, but others would have joined the race. There would have been a real debate about the future of the party.

Very disappointed that out of 402 mps, no-one has the guts to run against him. I have nothing against the man, but come on, there is one else who can lead them? What would they have done if a candidate hadn't been willing to give up their seat for this to happen.

Maybe reducing the CEO's pay might be part of the answer.

Why are politicians such sheep? I don't like this crowning of Andy Burnham, especially with the announcement that James Purnell as his chief of staff, a Blairite. There must be more than one person within Labour who a vision of a better UK for the 21st Century.

He has always been a tory in sheep's clothing. That is the reason I never voted for him.

Labour has 404 MPs, but they can only muster 4 people to lead the party at the moment, one of them not even in Parliament. There must be more than the usual suspects among the 404 that have a vision about the future, rather than living in the past, as the current contenders are?

Jacqui Boyd Alden @bvjacqui.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
None, they are all living the past. We need someone who has a vision for the future.Realise big retail is not coming back to town centres, so what do you do with empty spaces, knock them down if they are too old to renovate, remodelled newer centres into living spaces.

It would be stupid to have Andy Burham give up his mayoral position when there is no guarantee that he will be elected even in a safe seat and labour might well lose Manchester, in the current political climate.

Catherine West came over really well and exactly the sort of Labour MP I want to see.

If reform win as big as predicted, it will give us a foretaste of what to expect if they actually became the government. Hopefully, that will open people's eyes, and if doesn’t, then they get a government they deserve.

how can a newspaper be more informed than the leader of the country. It's just not believable.

Just yet another example of everything that can be sold is sold off to foreign investors. Nothing appears to be owned by British companies anymore. Next to go, the NHS.

We could do the same by not agreeing to Tesla's agreement to provide electricity!

I can't vote for a party that advocates for open borders and all drugs to be legal. Likewise, I can't vote for Reform.

If I were an immigrant facing this uncertainty,I wouldn't stay, especially with the increase in fees.

Have the people who voted for Greens actually read their manifesto? Do they really want open borders and access to all drugs that are now illegal. This is a protest vote, telling Labour to stop trying to out tory the Tories.

We only heard about the rule when the Guardian wrote an article about 2 weeks ago. We were alright but my daughter in the US has had to make a last-minute application for her daughter as they are travelling here in the summer. She had hope to do whilst she was here.

Hopefully, if Reform is elected and they mess up as they have done in other councils so far, people will see the light before the next general election.

So when the 16-year-old's don't vote for the party who gave them the power,do we lower the voting even more? It's like saying the majority of people over the age of 65 vote for the tories.

I wouldn't stay if I were in that situation, as they are obviously not appreciated by this country. To live 10 or 15 years with the uncertainty of whether you will be able to renew your visa is untenable. I've been in that position. You can't put down roots until that sword is removed.

There is an assumption that all degrees lead to professions that lead to better salaries. I am ashamed that I am the age group that imposed loans and fees on young people. Would I do a degree in teaching or nursing with debts exceeding 20,000, which are low-paying? No.

What age do children start school in the UK? I must admit to being confused, as I have relatives who say their child started school at two and a half, but it is actually nursery. What age is this report addressing?

Even though I am on medication for blood pressure, overweight, and a type 2 diabetic, I have had my blood pressure checked only once since we moved back, and that was by a nurse. On a recent visit, the doctor barely looked at me.

The nurse measures weight, blood pressure, and temperature. After that, the doctor came in and did a series of basic body checks like listening to my lungs and heart. Took barely anytime at all, but important basic steps.

Having lived in the US for 24 years, I have been shocked by the fundamental lack of procedure at my local surgery. Whatever type of doctor I saw in the USA, they would always do the basic checkups.

Yes, in the practice I use in Scotland, you are more likely to be seen by an ANPA or a trainee GP than a fully qualified doctor, which is all good until you have a complaint that needs more investigation.
010
Jacqui Boyd Alden @bvjacqui.bsky.social · 21/11/2025
Lucky to see a fully trained GP. In the 15 months of being my current practice, I have seen a practice partner once! once! There are 6 full-time doctors, apparently. I have seen 3 senior nurses who are similar to nurse practitioners and 3 trainee GPs. In the meantime,my health has deteriorated.

So the government has no idea who lives in this country if they can't track exits and returns via plane, boat, coach, or bus. No wonder we have issues with illegal immigration if they can't tell if ordinary UK nationals are just on holiday or haven't gone at all.

It is time for papers like the Guardian wrote an indepth article on how much it actually costs to enter this country. With the income requirements,£28,500 pa plus the NHS surchage, a good number of British citizens cannot bring their spouses to this county anymore.Work visas are even harder to get.

Plenty of plus-size clothes are available online, but only for giants. For some reason, designers don't think women under 5ft 2 should be plus-size. I suspect clothes for shorter men are even more challenging to find.

Why doesn’t the UK have longer fixed-term mortgages like the US. When we lived there, we were able to get a fixed rate for 15 yrs. If we had wanted to, we could have fixed it for 30 yrs.

Totally agreed, instead of the relentless dishing of Labour, do a deep dive on all the leading characters of Reform, especially Farage. I am not a fan of Starmer, but this endless sniping of Labour is pushing the reform agenda!

The issue with this approach is that now he has an even bigger audience than he got on Twitter. There are plenty nutcases on that platform, but arresting them just gives them a bigger voice. I had no idea he had posted this until today, and suddenly, he is all over the headlines!
