The Spirit Squadron’s statement on the ongoing negotiations regarding Trinity Rodman’s contract and the salary cap.

We are disappointed by the NWSL’s decision to veto the contract between Washington Spirit and Trinity Rodman, and we stand with the NWSLPA in opposition to the “HIP” rule.

Such a rule will create two tiers of players: those who are considered “high impact” and those who are not, based on nebulous criteria. It will also allow the league to continue to interfere in negotiations between the players and the teams. Instead, we urge the league to adopt the NWSLPA’s proposal to raise the salary cap.

Commissioner Berman has stated the league will “fight for” Trinity, but its actions demonstrate otherwise. The league’s actions so far undermine free agency, and they will suppress wages and harm the league’s growth.

This is greater than one player and one team. Current and former NWSL players fought for years for adequate pay and the right to decide where they play.

We will not go back.

D.C. United is a rudderless, aimless, hopeless organization with toxic ownership. Jason Levien is happy to continue missing the playoffs while his real estate portfolio grows. Jason Levien, out of our club. #LevienOut #SellTheTeam

Sports and politics may sometimes coexist uneasily, but they're inseparable at Washington Spirit games – where fans have been loudly and proudly chanting and displaying their opposition to Trump's takeover of D.C. Me for @51st.news: 51st.news/dc-spirit-tr...

The first thing we have to say is thank you, Troy. You were up front with us, stood there while we asked the tough questions, and you always let us know you loved DC and valued the supporters. It's a shame it came to this. Jason Levien: SELL THE TEAM! Cut and run. Do it now.

Good seeing LAFC/MLS allowing these banners to stay up Nashville supporters had to pushback greatly for theirs to remain A banner supporting a detained student lasted about 3 minutes at a #NERevs game this spring MLS needs to not stand in the way of these necessary expressions in a dark time

Today our beloved DC United is on the road against Nashville, but our thoughts are about something bigger than a soccer game. We're thinking about the safety of La Brigada de Oro. Solidarity with them, and fuck ICE.
