I don’t think he will have the intended outcome. Jail or Join my party isn’t a particulary convincing strategy.

These are like early CHP reactions, looking for consistency in the right. Honestly, just plain stupid and says nothing while pretending to ostentatiously reveal their hypocrisy.

I think this is a direct result of lowered quotas at state universities, which has been going on for some time now.

Being shunned because of leaving the group is a little exaggerated. There might be some cases but I doubt it is generally the case. One thing is true, that is, the group hasn’t been eager to increase the number of its followers.

One correction the fallout started in 2007, when Istanbul Municipality razed their dormitory in Kasimpasa. Before one of the important figures was elected from AKP. On the other hand, the brand of AKP’s islamism never appealed the group.

They have been at best lukewarm to AKP since they came to power. Erdoğan tried to get control of the group through one of MPs who is also a grandson of the founder of the group. This is probably their new strategy to take them under control. They don’t challenge the government openly.

That’s the one thing they have left that is convincing enough to continue their narrative of competence. For everything else the reality is in stark contrast to what they say.

I think Turkish judicial system has always been much more centralized than that of the US. Multilayered and decentralized nature of the system protects the US and also the incompetence and arrogance on Trump and Co. play an important role. RTE was a grassroots politician compared to them as well.

Then bought S4 missile system (for $10b) leading to getting kicked out of F35 project. It was unnecessary aggression against a country we weren’t in war. It has been a very costly stupid move no one in Turkey owns it.

Erdoğan started as a grassroots politician. During his mayoral campaign, he even visited brothels. He’d have been called as a hard left politician by US standards. That’s been the core of his personality cult. Trump is a reality star, still treats his presidency inherently a show.

I wouldn’t say informed bad intent. Malicious “omnipotence” is more like it. They do it because they can. They don’t believe the merit of it and don’t deign to understand. They are too arrogant to accept we’re at the mercy of the nature in the end.

Let’s call it a dictatorship dependent many factors to work. As long as a country doesn’t have petrol or extremely isolated, Turkey could be as authoritarian as it gets. Only similar country with a similar westernization experience is Russia and it has a much shorter democratic experience.

MMT @buzvesu.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
Turkish economic structure doesn’t allow for creating another Iran or Russia as it is simply impossible to fund the system. Thus, it is a fragile autocracy with a future tied to its autocrat. What will come after that is the scariest part for us.

He's not naive, just an old man with a hunger for power even if it's only being the leader of the main opposition party. It's not the first time he happily seized the opportunity. His rise to the top at RPP/CHP was as a result of Baykal's affair.

MMT @buzvesu.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
That’s mainly because of a lack of coherent strategy. Democrats need to come up with a new concrete offer to people. It should be radical and left-leaning as they need to take on “American Oligarchs”. Currently, they remind me of CHP extolling rule of law w/o having a tangible strategy.

The basis for confidence on Erdoğan’s part is misplaced as it still leans on the assumption of Turkey being a young country. Best case scenario for Turkey wo Europe is being Iran wo petrol. The need is mutual tho both sides want a partnership inherently excluding the other.

Will they be ruthless enough to match a power-hungry strongman’s will and cunning to hold on to power when push comes to shove? They are ultimately replaceable as CEOs and owners. The example of China shows you don’t need oligarchs to develop technology.

Besides, he continues to wield power by disruption not construction, which in the end amount to no legacy. Erdoğan has always wanted to supplant Atatürk and his legacy, which is out of question now. He could have power as long as he lives and that is the best he could get, far from what he desires.

This shows the limit of ruling bloc and it is a bleak picture for the country really. Incompetent governing, hamstringing the alternatives, hence a country forcefully kept in an untenable position.

Well no surprise there. Building a new identity is beyond the current politicians. There’s a clear lack intellectual discussion on an acceptable definition. Türkiyeli doesn’t cut it. It is what you get after pushing racist-level nationalism for a century, I guess.

Do you remember the dialogue between Soylu, then minister of the interior, and the governor who said that the perception of the public was really good after the earthquake in Elazığ? A nauseating Deja vu in a grander context unfortunately.
